i would have my mom drop me off at the mall regularly as a kid just to play metal slug 1 & 2 at towneast mall in dfw. turned all of my allowance into quarters at the arcade for ms 1 & 2... would spend hours just getting killed over and over again

had my mom buy me a neo geo pocket just for Metal Slug 1st and 2nd mission (not very good, but the NGOPocket wasnt a very good platform)

convinced my ex gf to get an apartment in forth worth near tcu college because they had a laundromat that had a metal slug X machine (i think it was X, or 3, not sure) even tho i had purchased all metal slug games available on the xbox store at our place, and had all of them in emulator form on my pc and laptop AND my cellphone (crappy controls)

bought gameboy advance for Metal Slug Advance ,ended up playing advance wars, double dragon & metroid fusion (the best metroid game ever and prob one of my favorite video games ever)

bought a psp just to play the metal slug anthology, when the vita came out i bought that and then bought the anthology again

had metal slug 3 & 4 for ps2 and anthology

i applied for a job at the company that ported the Metal Slug Anthology to PSP and PS2 and worked there for 3 years as a sound designer. had a stack full of copies in my apartment in lewisville. personally knew Russel Mirabelli (lead designer) and worked on same floor as him and Drew Danielson who was big on the project too

bought a nintendo DS for Metal Slug 7 . still on the fence about that one

if i see a metal slug game in a used bin i'll pretty much just buy it. or at least look at it and find some way to judge its previous owner

when my nephew was being born i was on a single-thru 1P game and paused it to go to the hospital . i was there for 3-4 hours, left to come back and my gf had switched off the console . i wanted to break up with her.

now, here in october of 2015 i'm down to just my ps vita an my laptop for MS anthology + 1 + 2 + X + 3 . i dont like playing it on my phone , controls are so shit .

gotta see how the game plays on

1) microsoft surface w/ USB controller (fuck bluetooth)

2) jxd s7800B handheld console

3) the new Steam controller

i had a factory XBOX and a modded one and i had all metal slug games on both and would play them on each depending on my mood

edit: oh yeah and this local OLD video place had a Metal Slug X machine i'd always be @ -- they replaced it with an SNK multiplatformer but it only had KOF, magical drop 3 and one other i cant remember . i stopped going as much, but my friend jason told me theyd got a Neo Geo and had Metal Slug 1 so i started going back -didnt play it as much cuz u had to rent a tv and etc vs just dumping quarters like buckets of water into a coin-op

Wow great to hear the extent of the mania! I have never actually played a metal slug game but recall watching others play them in the arcades. I marveled at how beautifully animated the sprites were/are.

I have played and enjoyed other 2D sidescrolling shooters like Contra and Gunstar Heroes. There's a new game in the genre coming out soon called Cuphead that looks AMAZING and it's made by passionate folks who grew up playing hardcore coin-op shooters like Metal Slug and Gunstar Heroes. Coming to XBox "when it's done":

for some reason I remember World Heroes 2 being the peak of SNK arcade popularity. Samurai Showdown 2 was pretty close, actually maybe that was more popular. goddam I miss games like that. Its a little bit of a tragedy Capcom stopped making them, even Street Fighter 4 was 3d.

Yeah, 2D sprite animation pretty much peaked with Street Fighter 3 imo. The sprites in the Guilty Gear X series are definitely more detailed, but nowhere near as brilliant looking from an animation standpoint.

have you ever played JoJo's Bizarre Adventure or Warzard by Capcom? I think they were made around the same time as Street Fighter 3. Also Dark Stalkers was pretty cool. I miss all that shit a lot

I have yet to play Ketsui !!!!! That game looks so fucking sick! !!! What's weird is I've been rocking the soundtrack for over a decade and still never played the game. Do you guys know how I could get Ketsui or the new DDP? I never saw any roms pop up

Oh boy... Yes VERY MUCH! Not very good at them mind you but I love the genre. Back around 2002 I had a Japanese Sega Saturn and tracked down as many Schmups as I could. Saturn was arguably the best console for the genre. I mean you had DoDonpachi, Sukyugurentai, Battle Garegga (one of the best soundtracks of any game, period), Sexy Parodius, fuckin' Radiant Silvergun... So many good ones. Dreamcast also had a slew of amazing schmups!

Ketsui was ported to Xbox 360 and PS3 afaik. Only in Japan mind you but those consoles are region free so you'd be able to play an import and there are plenty of Amercian sellers who have the game in stock on eBay at least:

ikaruga is only shooter i got and played, largely cos of its high status fame + playing in it high school with chums and having fun with it.

playing it today. it's like.. instant headache. instant pressure against part of my brain that processes what the fuck is going on. it's a real drainer. but i still kind of like it because it is so full on and insane.

There's a couple of dodonpachi games on ios, so they might run on osx as well. Never tried though. Because theyre on ios, i don't think theyre on steam. But i do recommend the ddp games as theyre basically the classic bullet hell shooters.
