delet...
On 11/8/2015 at 5:43 AM, Mesh Gear Fox said: i wouldn't even call oasis alt-rock. nothing 'alternative' about them. unlike blur or radiohead also delet, surely you have a few guilty pleasures yourself! i'm sorry to inform you, but blur were not an alternative band. It was pop, brit pop to be specific. Also, i don't know what guilty pleasures are with music, i either like the sonic textures, timbres and rhythms of something or i don't, and what i like in sound and beat hasn't changed since i can remember listening to music. My knowledge of the music available has increased in this time, but this has only really been mining favoured sonic veins deeper and wider. Of course in the course of this, i have listened to bands or artists you might deem 'embarrassing', even if it's one or two songs of theirs that really stuck with me and i thought most of it missed the mark (it's funny how people give bands the benefit of the doubt because they like a few tracks and go all in defending them to the nth for the nth, forcing themselves to 'understand' the dross). But i certainly wasn't listening to inxs or kylie minogue, when there was the cure or prince available. but to a greater point, i don't think i would have been capable of liking them, i felt wincing psychological pain when kylie was on for example. This musical choice was only ever presented to me in brief instances, when i caught it on the TV, cause we lived in an isolated area that you could only get to by boat and didn't have music in the house, although dad did have beefheart and zappa LPs and whatever, he never played them and we certainly didn't have a means to when he wasn't there, although i remember for a long drive he pulled out this tape he'd made of clear spot which was very much enjoyed. So really i got my music in the early years through brief moments of actually hearing something i was interested in on the television, which was pretty rare, of greater listened frequency was the disco soundtrack to cartoons or that pinball animation on sesame street or the synths on doctor who or listening to short wave radio static or vocally harmonizing with the sound of the envirude outboard motor as we went to and fro from where we were living, i wasn't so desperate for sound that i would like something just because it was there, or the television was saying that they were number one or whatever, if it wasn't sonically interesting it would be dismissed, and there was no peer group around me to tell me this, there was nothing, so i don't think i was influenced by any biases other than whether it fit the innate criteria that was held within me and those narrow bands of what is 'good', hold till today. delet...
it was invented by an UK journalist and then massively pushed by the record industry which was needing a new bandwagon with which bolster flagging sales, and you are entitled to think whatever you like, whether it's correct or not is another matter. Britpop was for a time the mainstream, deal. And why is pop a dirty word, prince and the cure were pop too. Much of what i like could be described as having a pop aesthetic, even if it hasn't been admired by that many people, heh. blanketforts
The thing about Blur: their first album (Leisure) was completely different from all of their successive stuff. I know I am in the complete minority but I *only* like that first album, which I first obtained and listened to in the context of early 90s American and UK "alternative rock"; therefore I consider myself a fan of Blur's "alternative" music but not their "Britpop" music. The latter I have tried to like on several occasions but just can't get into. Here's an example of "alt-rock" pre-BvO-feud Blur at their finest IMO: Thanks Haha Confused Sad Facepalm Burger Farnsworth Big Brain Like × Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/89237-oasis-frontman-on-radiohead-others-oh-my/page/3/#findComment-2388621 Share on other sites
blanketforts
The thing about guilty pleasures: more power to you if you can say you don't have them, but I personally know the difference between something I like mostly because I liked it at a different point in my personal musical listening history, and something I can wholeheartedly get behind right now for specific reasons. I don't think that there's anything wrong with categorizing certain music you like as "guilty pleasures" - to me it speaks to an expanded spectrum of reasons to like music. I could never say that I just like something or don't. Hell, a post-Leisure Blur track just came on on YouTube and I realized I like it more than I had previously. To me shades of gray are preferable to black and white, and shades of gray allows for guilty pleasures as a motivation for liking something. delet...
you are mischaracterizing what i said. My bands of interest clearly have blurred borders as that interest tapers off out of that frequency that tickles me, so it is not black and white. Over time, you find yourself pushing those boundaries in search of a new fix based around the old gear, so i can listen to 80s funk based stuff now that whilst has great backing, probably has a vocal style which i tolerate, just so i can get the new funk fun. Then there's stuff that i don't listen to anymore, that fit squarely in the middle of those bands of interest, I've consumed it, absorbed it and moved on, but they're not guilty pleasures if say a bill evans or early ac/dc track came on, as i still respect these things as well made music that i deeply appreciate and respect, even if i have no desire to listen to it currently, so there is no guilt whatsoever there. Ergo, my original point stands, and my sense of value in music has remained pretty static, even as i discovered new sounds, they were a continuation of an area of the spectrum i was aurally fascinated by. It's just how i am, i don't know why, it just is. Thanks Haha Confused Sad Facepalm Burger Farnsworth Big Brain Like × Quote Hide all signatures A member of the non sequitairiate. OK fair enough. I get your point. And I appreciate the separation of guilt from enjoyment. This is a topic I've been thinking about a lot recently. I do think that at my current age (40) I tend to be much more able to comfortably enjoy music, or not, than I was able to in the past when I had to contextualize everything. But I also know that my motives and desires re: musical enjoyment are likely to change at least a few more times, since they have done plenty of times already. Cool. yeah, i think in regular parlance, guilty pleasures denotes something that you would otherwise be embarrassed about revealing to polite company or anyone in your peer groups really. I was just moaning on cause i don't understand why you would want to hide your taste from anyone. I was always very musically opinionated with my friends though, to the point of being very rude now i look back on it, heh, tolerant bunch. Anyway, perhaps that stubbornness meant that the concept of guitly pleasures never happened for me. Checking out the singles for the second blur album and don't recognize any of it. Anyway, perhaps that stubbornness meant that the concept of guitly pleasures never happened for me. I think I actually ran with some very intolerant groups in the past as well as being extremely insecure, because a lot of my sense of identity in my twenties was very intertwined with what music I was into. First it was pretending I only liked obscure punk rock, and then later basking in the coolness of being an obsessive audio experimentalist / IDM/DnB enthusiast. Which overall made it hard for me to accept the part of me that loved all of the other music that I loved and had loved at earlier times. Only later in my life (last 10 years or so) was I able to reintegrate it all and not really care what others thought of what I liked. Of course this was pretty much all in my head, but it was hard to realize that at the time. Yeah MLIR is actually more of a bridge between their first and third albums than I realized. Ironically, I remember being very snobby about this album and refusing to listen to it when it came out. Now it's helping me make more sense of the band as a whole.
