How big is your interval, guys, before changing a phone again?

Every two years thanks to Apple

What does it mean "thanks to Apple"? I don't understand.

Apple has carefully crafted the culture around smartphones to introduce year-over-year upgrades - I myself only upgrade every non-S model year, although I might pass on the 7 in lieu of next year's model.

Before the iPhone, people hung onto their mobiles for way longer.

Sorry, I still don't understand what drives you to upgrade. Can you explain?

I really believe all these big tech companies are privately funnelling trillions of dollars into R&D looking for the next thing that will become the device to own in the coming decades.

Why would you privately funnel the money? If you declare an expense on R&D its taken off your tax bill. Its in your favour to move more of your expenses into R&D. I think declaring profits for shareholders is a higher priority than R&D, which is sad.

if samsung retained removable battery

It's actually one of the main reasons why I've not upgraded my s3 to an s6 or 7 - I need ma removable battery so I can get a proper one that lasts more than one day between charges ....

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

Is LG the last company doing replaceable batteries at this point?

I had the LG L2, which was great had a fantastic battery life.

I would have got it again but the contract company didn't offer it.

Apple has changed to an OS update model that constantly nags the user until they finally give in and update, which means older phones will eventually start getting slower and slower with each new revision to the OS. It ties into the planned obsolescence idea that I've experienced since I first started with "smartphones" (motorola a925, what a piece of shit phone). I don't think it's necessarily limited to Apple though.

My iphone 5 lasted over three years, quite a good run compared to my other phones. It was just starting to develop issues resulting in the screen freezing for up to a couple of minutes every now and then. A master reset could have fixed it, but I wanted something with more storage space and a better camera (so I don't have to use my gopro to record gear videos) so I decided to get the SE to replace it.. hopefully I can get a few years out of it.

update, Have to press twice instead of press and slide to get to the unlock screen and i can't just use the lock button. Then why did they move the clock to the left. And what's up with the unprofessional looking menu when you swipe up from the bottom to adjust brightness/volume, no way jobs would have allowed such a distasteful object and they've made it an extra swipe to get to the volume slider, luckily i just use the volume button on the edge of the ipud. And why does the timer now have a black background, they could at least give me a menu in the thing to reverse the colourscheme. -sie-

on the se you go into settings and go to accessibility and choose rest finger to unlock, now you only press once to unlock the phone. not that difficult.

It's not a phone it's a tablet and i don't like using my fingerprint to unlock the tablet. it takes longer than swiping across and entering the password used to before they made it an extra button push, plus i just don't like the idea that it's stored my fingerprint so don't use that function on principle because i find it distasteful, plus it doesn't work 100% of the time, so if i have to readjust my thumb even 15-20% of the time, that is enough of an annoyance that i don't wanna fucking use the function. The suggestion that you gave me doesn't help my particular gripe, wasn't that difficult to see where i was coming from so you should have saved yourself a post (i can be a smart arse too, heh).

slide to unlock is kind of redundant with touch id. personally i've never had issues with the feature. didn't realize you were on an ipad, in that case it sounds like you're sol.

Swiping down to dismiss and album in Music is stupid, bc it keeps pulling down Notifications. Transport controls in Music are noticeably larger, also in Maps, which seem to be aimed at using the phone while driving, although they always say don't use your phone while driving. I doubt it's that hard to use the phone while exercising, so that point is moot. While typing, after you hit a period or punctuation, the keyboard no longer switches back to letters, what's the point of that?

I'm from the future, so I know that one thing that we do have to look forward to are smartphones that are actually ergonomic and large.  Nobody needs a phone that is thinner than a pack of playing cards.  In a few years smartphones are finally going to start to use much larger batteries to allow for 1 week+ battery life.  Then after that, graphene technology will make batteries more efficient, so there'll be a wave of smaller phones again.

installing now with reckless abandon. no mac. no itunes. straight ota. looking forward to wiping out all of the useless apple apps cluttering up my phone. update finished. no brick. fucking stupid that now playing is on a separate "card" when you swipe up from the bottom now. there's plenty of room for it on the main "card"

Agreed on that - really annoying.

And I don't mean the Apple iWatch.

It will be interesting to see if Apple bucks that trend next year - 10th anniversary of the iPhone - you know they're going to do something special to celebrate, and hopefully not just some exclusive colour or some shite like that.

'Ceramic White 10th Anniversary iPhone X - only 3500.00' Jony Ive can gush lovingly about it's manufacture in some soft-core product porn video.

Mobile phones have reached their peak - at this point, it will take something truly innovative to stir up the markets again. But, what if the mobile phone has become an appliance, something that first and foremost is meant to do tasks in a familiar way, thus sapping all the innovation from it by necessity of familiarity?

Next year will be OLED curved glass screen (no bezels), no home button and wireless charging - apparently according to some online sources.

"It's the best iPhone we've ever made.... until next year"

i doubt they'd change the form factor for an S version

But this is the 10th anniversary since the iPhone's release - they will do a special model. LOL if they do a 7S as well; gotta make dat money!

technically, the iphone 7 is the tenth one.

1. iphone

2. 3g

3. 3gs

4. 4

5. 4s

6. 5

7. 5s

8. 6

9. 6s

10. 7

i dont see any special phone for the 7s other than maybe more colors and finishes that they suggest you cover up with a case. i'd love to see a rugged SE model. waterproof, shatterproof, etc. make it bulky with a bigger battery. i thought the 6 was too thin for me and the 7 is thinner right? i was considering the SE model to replace my 6 since i just shattered the screen. i opted to replace the screen and wait for the 7s.

Fuck yer planned obsolesence. Had one of these for the last 8 years or so:

Now severely scratched and ink-stained from pen-leaking-in-pocket moments; missing the direction button so that you have to press the little soldered nubs underneath to navigate. We've had many adventures and I'll be bereft when it finally stops working.

Rain Over Mountain is out now; 100% of Bandcamp sales are donated to the Motor Neurone Disease Association:

i have a g5 from like a dozen years ago. it runs on osx 10.4.11. works perfectly for music-making. however, it pretty much doesn't work on the internet and my phone no longer even connects. 10.4.11 is the highest OS it will go up to bc after that my hardware is no longer compatible with newer osx versions. this is something of a saving grace imo.

i have an iphone 5. i've never updated the os it came with and always delete them from my device as soon as i get the notification that they're available (bc, yeah, apple just shoves a 1gb update into your phone without asking. also works fine and i've had it longer than any of my other iphones.

every other iphone or macbook i've had i've updated to keep up with the freshest os and without fail the machines became progressively more useless.

fuck that shit.

i bought an se because i wanted a nice camera and a reasonably sized phone for small hands idm.

has survived many drops that my wife's 6s screen would've been destroyed in. ios 10 is fine for me so far.

Honestly for me I happen to like most of what Apple comes out with, both software and design-wise. I don't treat the phone as a status symbol or anything, but as a tool, and if the newer model offers tools and features I see worth having, I upgrade.

For example, in iOS 10, the Messages app now shows previews of links in the message - I really like that and find it very useful. Also, the integrated search in Messages is damn handy when I'm trying to find a meme to bug my kids with :dadjoke:

Also, in my line of work I do responsive design, so having a mobile device to test with is a must, and thankfully my job provides my phone (up to this point) for free, and the service as well.

i am making it a point to not update my phone like i do now once i get my next one. There is no question at all that their last update is deteriorating my phones performance just in time for the new one. no question at all.
