phudoshin
As I gear up for the aul faves in Texas's Dayfornight festival, one old fogey going to see a couple of other old fogeys it occurs to me that Ive not heard of any other artists since the top 4 Afx, SP, boc and Ae hit the scene, of equal voracity, uniqueness and brilliance. So is there any such new feckers out there? any equivalent's at all? Who are the new kids making waves? (Thought t coud've been Burial a while back but not quite!) Guest Chesney
Nobody is given the chance to grow into the artists they can be because people are still busy on the old stuff OR people are way too hyped off the bat that they go up their own arse and pop. You either end up having really underground artists that grow out of their own love but barely get heard or you get people in it for the kudos rather than the music so they genre hop and are more likely to get it wrong and upset fans. phudoshin
So the pre-social media era was a crucible for incredible electronic creativity and the right level marketing and we just wont see it again? Guest Chesney
Internet and social media has driven the listener to fast paced conveyor belt consumerism or ultimate fanboyism for the people on the spectrum. we either have no attention span or we have far too much to the point we talk about facets of an artist to an inane and embarrassing degree. gnarlybog
In terms of out-of-nowhere originality and consistency, I would gladly place Burial among the big dudes. It would help to judge if he released albums rather than eps, though. I know people here love Oneohtrix Point Never, but he never comes close to me. I think the dude and his ideas are interesting, but compositionally I don't really vibe with it. His songs feel like doodles. Lately, I sense an over saturation of electronic music, where things are sounding too familiar or unsurprising... maybe my ears are just tired of the same shit, or electronic music is too easy to make these days. Guest bitroast
i would say OPN has potential to be on par with the others. maybe ? it's hard to say .. given the context of what the electronic music scene meant in the 90s .. what with gear becoming more available, post techno/hip hop style music being birthed from bedroom artists getting their hand on affordable gear. misc
I agree with OPN. Maybe I just don't know enough other music, but it sounds to me like he's doing something very unique. Plus the large shifts in style between albums really separates him from others. The progression of the last 4 albums is crazy. I think one day he could definitely be viewed in a similar light to the big four. Guest bitroast
he's also on Warp Records and being heavily promoted as a culturally relevant musical god (alongside Warp heavily promoting Aphex twin, autechre, boc, squarepusher, plaid, etc. back in the 90s-00s) ... so that alone must be worth something right ?? :^ ) !!!! Brisbot
The question makes me think of spiritual successors, and there's been no one for aphex yet.I am thinking of someone who has had not only the level of influence these two have, but the diversity of music. Most artists have one style, or 2 styles, one they start out with and then slowly transition to over the course of a few albums. Aphex reinvented himself for almost every release, even the afx ones... hell even the polygon windows of the world. It all managed to sound like him somehow, even though the style is almost completely different album to album. Not only that but the music managed to remain consistently good. It wasn't like he'd try something new and it would suck.I don't think anyone else has accomplished this much reinvention over their careers yet. I'm definitely hoping for someone to pop up that does. Now, Aphex is more like other artists, steadily reinventing himself from album to album ever since analord thru syro. However in the 90s, holy shit. There have been plenty of artists as fun to listen to as aphex and squarepusher, the diversity however tends to not be there in the artists, each release sounds similar, or the style only changes so much. So basically, no spiritual successors yet. Brisbot
SP's style also is one that slowly transitioned from release to release. I honestly think WHY Aphex is better than other artists is because of the reinvention. There's aphex for any mood. I have to be in a certain mood to listen to SP.. or Tim Hecker.. or Clark.. or Wisp, etc. Even though each of these artists are on the same level skillwise in their respective styles, imho.So I end up listening to aphex more. Well I used to anyway. He's also had a lot more time than these other artists to reinvent himself. However if you take a snapshot of aphex from 1992 to 2001, the reinvention thing is still the same.
