I think it is unwise to sneer and ignore the complaints of men (perhaps straight, white, but not necessarily). This is my theory: anglo culture is a patriarchal conquest-oriented warrior culture, at least to a large degree. This may seem confusing and counterintuitive as an argument but if you observe the history of anglo societies, the male rights of passage continue to this day to be primarily based on conquest, and social status based on whether it is achieved. competition is prized and failure results in a lesser status. gradually the meaning of conquest has adapted into ideas of economic self-suffiency, stoicness, and virility. because of the economic trends in the US and other anglo countries, the opportunity to achieve this male right of passage has diminished to near-impossibility. That lack of passage into cultural adulthood leads to deep self-doubt and hatred, which is projected outward.

Yes that's partly the patriarchical theory no? I think that assessment is correct to an extent, but accounts for only part of the reason for the alienation of men (and other problems related to it).. is also differently valid in different parts of the world (like all of the left's ideas)... it is important not to blame it all on one thing!

 

I think another reason (which is discussed in the interview I linked) is the lack of acknowledgement of fatherhood as a positive and nessesary influence in the development of children.. which has (in part) led to more single-parent families, divorses etc. and in turn leads to problems with depression, delay of gratification and other myriad of problems which we see in young people today (not only men!). I think this reason is more relevant for places like Sweden whereas the pathriarcical theory is more relevant for 2nd world countries and perhaps also the US (I havent lived there so i dont know).

 

I'm not saying the patriarchy theory is complete bs.. because is not. I'm saying is important to not fall prey to ideological possession and believing that a single ideology has all the correct answers to all problems (which to answer qinos question from before, i think is the main thing I have learned from jbp). That way we prevent ourselves and society from falling into to the extremes of either the right or the left!
