Could this possibly be the first time a president wins the election without winning Florida & Ohio, and needing PA?

Ohio is the stalwart of that tradition... no president who has one the election (for a very long time) has ever won without also winning Ohio.

Saw this rather poignant and relevant article posted online:

  Quote

Back in 1787, as the Constitutional Convention ended, a woman came up to Ben Franklin and asked him what we got. He replied, "A republic, madam, if you can keep it.” After this election, it looks like we can’t.

It doesn’t matter whether Biden wins (as is looking more likely, Trump’s threats to sue notwithstanding). It doesn’t matter if we get the Senate (looking less likely, though still possible). What matters is that Trump and the Republicans, who ran a profoundly anti-democratic campaign, lied repeatedly, and openly cheated everywhere they could, were not severely punished for it.

What matters is that the lies worked.

A functioning democracy (Franklin’s republic) depends on an educated citizenry who understand reality and work within it. What we saw last night is that close to half of the votes were cast by people who denied reality. The reality of the pandemic and Trump’s totally incompetent handling of it. The reality of climate change. The reality of GOP corruption and authoritarianism.

Too many people believed the lies. Too many people voted for what they were deliberately misled into believing was their own self-interest. Too many people wanted an authoritarian ruler who would bring back their fantasy world where N---— knew their place, where Jews faced quotas, where women were obedient to the men in their life, where gays and lesbians hid for shame, where the Bible was the moral and legal rule.

This was an election where a determined minority tried and largely succeeded in imposing its will on a majority that sees the world as it really is. It was an election where fantasy beat out reality, where greed defeated compassion, where patriotism was defined by religion and skin color, and by loyalty to a man, not to an idea.

Reactionary forces from Republicans to the oil interests to fundamentalists have been working hard for the last half-century to kill public education in this country. Education teaches people how to think rationally, how to examine issues critically, how to appreciate facts and to apply reason, how to debate properly, how to respect diversity of opinion, of culture, of belief. In short, how to deal with reality. Education is the means by which the less fortunate in life can achieve equal standing in the world. It is the guarantor of a true democratic republic.

A true democratic republic depends on rational debate, on acknowledging facts, on respecting other points of view, on following conventions that have the majesty though not the force of law, on sharing power and on the peaceful transfer of power. All of that was on the ballot last night, and lost. Regardless of the outcome in the next few days, the fact that it was even close means that far too many citizens have not been educated, and will not be educated, in their responsibilities as custodians of the American experiment.

I thought Texas awarded electoral votes based on the state's popular vote? They do it based on districts?

They do - I'm talking about redistricting, which draws the boundaries for republican and democratic districts and both parties go to enormous lengths when doing so to ensure the other side (and the people in those districts) are disenfranchised as possible.

Ohio has my favorite roller coaster park. I think we should keep Ohio around. Columbus also has a cool arts district. Cleveland is cold. Dayton is small. Cincinnati has some cool bridges. What else am I missing?

Looks like Biden's going to win it. Good. Fix the senate in two years please.

Some songs I made with my fingers and electronics. In the process of making some more. Hopefully.

There were only two outcomes in conservatives minds:

1. Trump wins

2. Biden wins because of voter fraud

Do you think they are aware there is no scenario in their minds where Biden wins fair and square? no. They really lack self-awareness.

I guess they don't remember 2016 where their great leader WON the election in this supposedly fraudulent system. I bet if you asked this family member if there is any way biden could have win fairly in his/her eyes, they would say No. In their minds Trump only loses because everyone else is out to get him, and that there is no reality where he loses legitimately.

That is what Trump has been priming his base to think the past few weeks ever since he was told Biden will probably win this election. I mean the guy was talking about the 2020 elections being fraudulent before the votes were even counted, IN THE PAST TENSE basically. Some reason it doesn't raise a red flag in conservatives minds like it would anyone else even mildly good at detecting Bullshit.

Most important lesson I've learned, don't try to apply logic when analyzing their behavior.

I'm celebrating Michigan going to Biden with a Founders:

True, but you still have to try. I think there is a very good chance for violence from their side in 2020. Much more than when Obama was in office. Fascism makes them feel entitled/invincible in a way straightforward conservatism didn't in earlier elections.

Since so many of my family are having a horrible day, I actually feel a little bad for them. Because they are upset in general, but not because of the reason they are.

well, black people in the south supported biden heavily over sanders and other candidates in the primary and that kind of sealed the deal. also, young people didn't come out to vote for sanders. he got more votes of young people but biden got some and most people over 40 voted for biden in the primaries. so, ratfuckery aside, biden got more votes by far. i'd have loved a bernie candidacy but it'd be tough slog against trump. bernie would have to sell his message harder than anyone and it would've been tough during covid. a lot of boomers don't like bernie and there is such rapid paralyzing fear of bernie amongst right leaning voters and GOP voters. the "he's  socialist" thing stuck really hard.

The “socialist” angle absolutely would have prevented Bernie from winning the upper Midwest, which is absolutely going to decide this election.  Again.

The whole strategy of running with Biden was to grab back that blue wall, which was clearly terrified of a Clinton presidency.

The Berners coming out in force in Austin, TX were never going to be able make up the gap of losing that blue wall.

Unfortunately, until there is a significant demographic shift away from Boomer Voting Power, the Democrats will always need to be broadly center-left.

My great hope for the country is that boomers aging out of, uh life I guess, will open up an opportunity for a politically valid progressive third party, with the Democrats taking the traditional centrist position and the GOP being greatly diminished and recognized as the far-right nuthouse it actually is.  Even that shift would have an uphill battle for a generation or two given structural impediments.  But failing that, we could realistically see Democrats pivoting left, slowly, slowly.

This moment is about setting the groundwork for that path, and there is reason to be cautiously optimistic (if Biden can hang on and win it).

This is what I have been thinking the past few years. Bernie's ideas will EVENTUALLY win over, but won't be viable till... I dunno... 2040ish. Country is just too conservative and the Trump administration has proven that to me.

Yep. Even if Bernie could have been elected in 2020 he would be functionally powerless as President, which would only end up playing in favor of the GOP four years later.
