Looks like we're slated to win this one. There's still a chance for GOP but not a good one. We can lose PA, FL, GA, and NC and still win. WI and MI have 94/98% reported votes and we're still up (not considerably but still within a margin where a recount won't change anything). Nevada will be a nice bonus.

the gop mostly likely remaining in control of the senate is a disastrous result, and will severely limit any efforts to make the usa a more equitable and democratic country.  granting PR and DC statehood (4 more senate seats), and then inspiring a younger generation to vote, could have gotten rid of the clear power bias which currently exists, paving the way to get rid of policy that blatantly upholds monied and/or white interests.

also agree everything @jules said.  i am dissappoint

We have a solid chance of flipping the senate in 2022. 12 Democrats and 22 Republicans are up for reelection: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2022_United_States_Senate_elections

I thought Texas awarded electoral votes based on the state's popular vote? They do it based on districts?

Nebraska does I think, I keep seeing it with gray lines on maps.

The election rules and methods vary from state to state, besides a few firm things in the constitution and some key acts about it it's very decentralized and wildly different from state to state.

If Bernie won the primary, we would have found out last night that Trump just got another 4 years. Short game vs long game.

How do supporters of that system justify that votes from different places have different impact on the end result? Isn't it a core principle of democracy that every vote counts the same? Just curious with what sort of reasoning people defend a system like that.

If you look at the way Maine is split up, I think they try to do it based on population.  Most of the residents in Maine live on the southern coast, and that section is worth 1 electoral college vote, whereas the rest is worth 2.

the original reasoning was to convince smaller states to stay in the union despite not having any power if it was based on population alone.  specifically it was to allow states with high proportions of non-voting slave populations to have some level of equivalent political power with northern states.  so in essence it's a relic of slavery era electoral workarounds that hasn't been abolished

edit: oops this is not an electoral college post i am replying to.

yes. and mcconnell eeking his way through means it is going to be several more years of the exact thing we have today. nothing getting passed, stonewalling, refusing to cooperate. it's like watching a shirts vs. skins game where the losers are the audience.

Trump's meltdown will be epic once it becomes clear that he can't win no matter how he contests it. He knows he's fucked with a bunch of lawsuits waiting and loans due.

No doubt that places like Twitter and Facebook have an inordinate amount of power on what kind of info the users are getting. They need to be chopped up as much as their owners.

The establishment Dems got scared and did some ratfuckery to get Biden as their nominee. Question is would a scary socialist grandpa have a chance against a fashy doofus. You know the right-wing media would go all out on SOCIALISMS WILL EAT YOUR BABIES!!!1 scare-mongering and as we've seen some are just unreachable and it would probably have gone to Trump. Or then the Dems having a candidate, who actually had a platform that is actually progressive and tangibly meaningful to a lot of people, that could have energized people much more than now.  Instead they offered a mummified milquetoast centrist and a platform that is as meh as possible.

Got it. Political backroom country-club skullfuckery. Nothing new in the West. As I suspected.

Thanks for the info, i really hope so.. But this year Republicans were also  defending 23 seats and Democrats 12 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2020_United_States_Senate_elections). One can hope that a different mix of states will be more competitive and they can net flip just a couple more seats needed

It is funny how it is only corrupt in states he is losing. Ohio counted mail-in ballots first and Biden had the lead - then election day happened and Trump won. So that is ok. Other states count mail-in ballots after polls close and in those cases where that turns the state from Trump to Biden, it is not ok. Amazing.
