All the best shawarma/kebab/pita wrap/whatever related stuff I had was in Germany. Avoid all Asian food in Germany, though. Phô? Phôgettuboutit!

I spent years living off kebab eating it at least 3 or 4 times a week. All my relevant body parts consist of it. I will eat kebab today, haven't had it in a while. Agree about Asian stuff. It tastes like it's made for people who only eat bratwurst and sauerkraut and when they visit an exotic country spend all day in the resort ordering Schnitzel complaining that the beer tastes like water. There are some really good places, too, but it's rare. There are so many Vietnamese people living here, why does none of them even get the idea to make authentic Vietnamese food? The best Phô and generally Asian stuff outside of Asia I ever had was in Lissabon. The most terrifying kebab I had was in Bulgaria. They put Aioli in it  How is it even possible to think it's a good idea to put Aioli in a kebab?

TBH I'm kind of annoyed at kebab for repressing showarma (we spell it shoarma but I'll add the w for legibility). Shawarma used to be the main middle eastern meat meal until kebab started becoming ubiquitous around 20 years ago and now it's difficult to find places that offer even a half decent shaurma, and then when it is on the menu 9 times out of 10 the place won't have pita bread and no onion sauce and forget about getting a decent garlic sauce. And I could be wrong on this but it seems to me with kebab it's a lot easier to get away with using low quality meat, over here usually it's those frozen cones of separated meat resulting in a way too uniform flavour and texture.

I haven't actually tried Döner Kebab before, but I made my own shawarma a few times in late 2017. There's a German restaurant in the north part of my city but I'd imagine the menu is rather bare bones compared to the real deal. And I don't think it included Döner Kebab last time I checked.

But after doing a Google image search I'm even more hungry now, even though I rarely eat meat anymore.

I don't think you can get a Döner in a German restaurant. I imagine they serve traditional German food: Schnitzel, Sauerbraten, Sauerkraut etc. Döner as we know it today was invented by turkish immigrants in Berlin. It's fast food and basically fulfills the role burger has in the US (kind of). It's not fancy at all and luckily relatively cheap. It's available everywhere and just a good way to get really full if one so desires

This is not Döner. This is made with real meat. For it to be Döner it needs to made with some sort of fluffy processed meat product.

Döner is disgusting and Germans should be ashamed of themselves for allowing their Turkish immigrant population to invent it.

That's what happens when you give immigrants too many rights. 

I just went to get a Döner and was devastated to see that the prices went up a whopping 7.5%. Outrageous!

Hmmm, Döner quality varies greatly. There are deep abysses when it comes to kebab, for sure. Huge differences. And you neeen't to forget that we are dealing with junk food here. The concept of junk food is being gross but at the same time satisfying. And any kebab, even the worst Bulgarian kebab made from plastic wrap and dead prisoners, is better than the shit they sell at McDonald's and the like

PS: I've heard that in the Arabic world they sell spaghetti plus ketchup as "Sweet Pasta", lol

Come to Ottawa. Many many shawarma places run by syrians/lebanese etc. Having friends over for lunch on Saturday, we are getting the family platter from our favourite place

Now that you are saying it I remember at least 3 shawarma shops that closed but a couple of kebab shops opening in that same area. I guess it's mostly because of the price difference. Kebab is 4€ here and shawarma 5 - 6€ while at the same time being smaller. So all the drunk teenagers coming from the clubs will go to the kebab store, not the shawarma store. But luckily shawarma is getting a revival. Lots of Arabic fast food stores are opening these days. Not sure if it has anything to do with the refugee wave of 2015. To be honest I'd rather see some actual restaurants offering authentic cuisine and not the fast food version of these dishes
