I almost did the same and then started to look at the actual content and realised I already had it. Then proceeded to listen to the Milan set.

if I didn't fall into the trap it's only because I temporarily suspended the prepaid card. Than, the first thing I did was, in fact, proceed with the milan set

goddamn i can't wait for the new sets, despite my earlier mentions of being slow to embrace the live material. at this point they could fart in a trombone and release it on a Zune and I would be intrigued.

the announcement reminded me just how little i’ve listened to the already released 22 sets…kinda binged at first then popped back at some point but have barely touched them since. i listened to Bergen a day or so back & jesus there’s so much in there :catnope:

I've heard most of them whilst running outdoors. Especially Bergen, London A&B, and Athens.

So far, Bergen has the most incredible harmonic development/progression at the 38:00 sequence. The lush but ominous pads, gonk bell and bass combination are stupid sick.

The other thing is, glad to read your "there's so much in there" phrase. it's as if the music is structured in a way so as to play with the listener's focus and memory. I still haven't managed to memorise the "macrostructure" of the entire set(s). (That's not something new to Ae's music obviously. After the 2005 gig I could hardly remember anything, but after listening to the Glasgow soundboard over and over again, I eventually memorised lots of structures and changes) Although there are some definitive moments where sequence A transitions to sequence B, the transitions are slow and fused. And I've noticed that, I start listening and eventually my mind focuses elsewhere; when it's back in-focus again, I immediately think "wait, what's been going on so far, what did I miss", "where did that come from, how did this evolve to that". Like observing a painting only through a macro lens, watching small sections of it at a given instance.

textwall ahead sorry…

Bergen stood out from my earlier rounds of listening but i’m not sure i could nail down why, i imagine you’ve articulated it far better than i even understand yet. will have to key in on that 38:00+ sequence on my next listen which won’t be long…

i agree w/ the playing with a listener’s memory, and i have approached these live soundboards all from that perspective as a whole in fact. especially when things were very similar for much of the 14/15 sets, i think i described it before as being like different versions of the same album so every time you click play it’s a little different, & my memory is so bad that it was almost like experiencing an album for the second time, every time.

i get you’re talking more about the attended concert vs recording experience, almost like your memory got wiped or something. (listening to the Austin set was exactly that for me) i think these are all correct…in some way, the true live experience will always be a unique thing for those who attended, even if there’s a recorded set at home….it just ain’t the same, especially given S&Rs approach of purposefully trying to tweak & present something live for that venue + crowd that night.

seeing things more in detail on further examination is sometimes good but sometimes not…i notice all kinds of ‘mistakes’ in the 14/15 sets now after listening to them all regularly for nearing a decade…kicking things in what feels like ‘early’ & letting weird little tradition things run too long or sorta fall apart, it’s all small stuff, not saying it’s bad or wrong, but it feels like small missteps, like a bass player hitting a wrong note in a live show. it’s not a big deal live, it happens, except it’s on the live album now lol

the slower more organic transitions between sections in the 22 sets (partly in the 16 sets too…) is really cool, it’s really honestly very interesting & technically/musically really crazy complex maybe, idk, but it’s a big part of the new sets being so overwhelming imo. there’s less delineation for my brain to try and grasp and categorize/etc.

that playing with focus is something they’ve always done of course, it’s often only on many listens we start to see those things better (see ‘when it clicks’) so them doing it live surely tracks. it’s great. it’s difficult af too tho. overwhelming/overpowering. or maybe i just need to listen more to get a better handle on it all…

(nice humblebrag on the ‘running & being healthy’ thing slid in there btw…. :nyan:)

I’m digging the discussion of “playing with the listener’s memory” It sure seems an important part of living with the live materiel over time especially.

So often I’ll be listening to a show I’ve heard several times, a section I’m familiar with that looms in the senses of my mind and in day dreaming flashes, and suddenly I think

How Did I Get Here?

Even though I know the flow of the set, the section currently playing and I’ve heard this specific performance before. Suddenly I’ll have no idea how we got where we are in the music.
