Thats true, thanks, the losing candidates did concede in most cases. In fact when I looked it up, I find Trump even conceded in Jan 2021, eventually, but knew his supporters would forget about that little detail so then went back to 'stop the steal' afterwards. Its good that your political parties are still following protocol in the sense that the loser concedes. But then afterwards the supporters/activists on the losing side usually find a narrative that supports the idea that they lost because of cheating or illegal behaviour. So I was talking about that aspect of it, and I think its to do with engagement being so important, 'we lost' is not a message thats very interesting, 'they cheated' is much better at keeping everyone engaged and riled up for next time.

that video from january 7th is interesting. i remember that. at the time it seemed like a cover-your-ass kind of thing, as though he were concerned about consequences. what he said is that congress certified the election and that a new administration would begin on january 20th. he didn't admit that he lost the election. during the 2 weeks following january 6th, there was a lot of discussion about invoking the 25th amendment, having his cabinet vote him out of the office. congress also was preparing the second impeachment of trump.

trump plays both sides of things, messaging opposite things at different times, manipulating different populations. for example, lex fridman asked him if he lost and he said he lost by a whisker. later, in a debate, that was brought up and trump walked it back “No. I don’t acknowledge that at all. I said that sarcastically” 

when gore lost because the supreme court delivered an ugly decision handing the election to bush, gore didn't make a stink, specifically because it would be bad for the country for him to earnestly try to get people to question the legitimacy of the election. anyway, that scenario was very different. gore didn't orchestrate a whole plan to overturn an election. trump's contesting of the election was not in good faith, and he has continued with that deceit, which is an attack on the country.

once again here's an overview of the coup attempt:

trump's actions around the 2020 election were nothing like anything else that's happened in american history. it was a full-on coup attempt.
