IDM/Drill n Bass questions

I used to use a tracker back in the day. I started on Soundtracker 2.1 on the amiga, then moved up to protracker.

I thought I'd have a play with renoise today and it is damn good for drill and breakcore. So good in fact that I just outright bought the thing. I used a tracker interface all the time from about 89-95 so it was like slipping into comfortable shoes, but with jet wings on them.

I won't switch to it as my primary composition tool because for melodic stuff I prefer using logic but this thing can fuck up audio really nicely.

You don't need a tracker to make the stuff Squarepusher/Aphex Twin make. All I know is that Vsnares does (renoise, as mentioned --not an intuitive program for me).

I use Acid, but I think you can do all the same things with Cubase. Just load up a break (or make your own), sync it up with whatever tempo you want to work with, then divide the grid up into 8ths/16ths/64ths/triplets accordingly. Matching up what's in your head with what's on the grid just takes a bit of experience (knowing that an 8th note kick + an 8th note high hat + a sliced up snare rush will sound like X).

And yeah, the most key thing is of course talent. Not everyone can do what these guys are doing half as well as they do it.

can you sing that fucked up rhythm in your head? well if you can't just make ambient. if you can, work. maybe it would be better not to reach that result but to reach something more personal, what do you think? which means not asking for techniques but developing your owns. (tho it's fun to slice the amen break but since it's been overused you can only use it for cheese i guess)
