Steels is one I definitely don't get. Perhaps you need to be into music making or the MPC or whatever to 'get' it. To me it just sounds quite lifeless and bare (not in a good way - I like Plasticman and others who do the minimal thing, but Steels doesn't have much of an atmosphere for me.) Bncy Castl is probably the worst thing they've ever done, imho; it's not goofy or crazy enough to be fun in that way, and it's obviously not serious, either.

I think what Sam said sums it up for me, in reflection. The tracks don't go somewhere interesting, and they sound ALMOST good but never really hit it off. If I ever like Quaristice, it's when I force myself to, which ends up feeling silly and then I go and put on some older AE (or even some other electronic music) and realise 'forcing' yourself to like something is a waste of time. Take Ipacial Section off Untilted, for example: now THAT's an example of a really challenging, fat, satisfying track. Nothing off Quaristice ever reaches those heights: they mostly start with nice ideas that never get fully devloped.

(ps - I'm not suggesting people who actually like Quaristice are forcing themselves to like it. I am only speaking for myself.)

Not at all. Steels is one the best thing's moving on Quaristice. I don't think you have to produce music or be a master or a novice with an MPC to "get" any of Autechre's tracks.

I think those anticipating the last track will be bitterly disappointed should they be expecting the live set. I don't think Ae will be releasing this unfortunately. We will all have to make do with the (re-mastered) Ontario recording.

yea as if ppl think its going to be a live set, why would they put their entire live set out and call it Perlence Subrange 6-36? THINK ABOUT IT!!!

...of course the 2008 live set won't be released yet, they save that on to the next album.

It wont happen: think glasgow soundboard situation only just under three years later. It was never released. Autechre move onto new things with albums.

Is this just a mathematical guess, or have you heard it? I don't see the track on Bleep yet...

does seem like a live track length :-) maybe that is why all the heavy handed bootleg business, also they listen to us I guess...I cant see it being wrong about the 1hr 40mins...I hope its not a megamix of all the tracks

Defo. This was something that me and my mate ended up saying to eachother after we listened to it in my house and then fucked off for a few pints....we were both pretty disappointed but trying not admit it too much, but it all boiled down to us basically both agreeing that you shouldn't have to force yourself to enjoy an album...and that the whole listen was a bit torturous at times. Confield has a hell of a lot of dissonant moments, but the amount of tracks and their duration seems to let you soak up the vibe and atmosphere of the album better. If Bnc Castl came straight after Parhelic Triangle or Eidetic Casein it wouldn't seem right at all, and on Quaristice, it doesn't seem to feel right either....(puts on confield*)

If Quaristice was an EP, and ran something like>

Altibzz

The Plclcp

Paralel Suns

Fol4

Perlence Suns

Notwo

......i think i'd relish it a lot more.

If they released an ep which went like>

Perlence

IO

Steels

Tankakern

90101-5l-l

Fwze

Bnc Castl

Chenc9

.....I mightn't dig it as much, but it'd still make a bit more sense to me.

The vibe of the LP basically just seems a bit vague to me. Going back to Confield though, "Uviol" to me is a perfect example of a track being really well placed in running order.....it serves as a great breather after the horrible vibe off of "Eidetic Casein", but still maintains the unsettling atmosphere of the album. When "Theswere" comes on on Quaristice, it almost kinda seems like a small window of comic relief or something, which is cool, but then "WNSN" comes on and it's like "wait, things are going nasty AGAIN? Wait....what the fuck is going on!?"

I think though that over the past couple of releases there have been points where there are hints of a kinda disjointed vibe that i just don't think works, at least for me. "Xylin Room" rocks for the first bit, but then loses me. There have been times when i've stuck on draft 7.30, and that track isn't even over yet, and i'm already turning around thinking "hangon, what track is this?"

BUT, Draft still runs well enough for me to dig it. "Surriperre" is perfectly placed. I like Untilted, but I would like to see them place a higher amount emphasis on the melodic parts of the tracks than they do. I don't mean that in a "i want melody, i don't want harsh crazy percussion" way, more so that it sometimes seems that when they are revealing one of their cool, lush melodic moments, they only do it for a brief few moments and then kill it, as if to say "right that's enough that".

That's why I think the untilted live set works soooo well. There's the right amount of emphasis placed upon percussion, melody, ambience, sound design, etc.

Also, I don't know if i quite get the whole "it takes two years to *get* and autechre album" thing.....I've been listening to them for about 6 years now. For the first year or two, it was pretty much just Amber...my brother gave me his tape of it while I was totally absorbed in Boards of Canada, and i gradually released that it kicked ass........then i sought out tri repetae, chiastic slide, lp5, ep7 and the EPs. Spent about 6 months pouring over them. Then Untilted came out. I didn't really dig it, but realised that i hadn't checked out Confield and Draft 7.30, so i got Confield, and immediately dug the intro. There were tracks that i wasn't mad on initially, but once i sat down and gave the album a good bit of listening, i really liked it. And that paved the way for draft and untilted. But, with those albums, that happened over the space of a few months. It didn't take me two years, and the only way that my view of those albums has changed is simply that certain tracks have more nostalgiac depth for me. And I know that the same will happen with Quaristice, but i don't think that will change my attitude towards the album...

Anyhow, here's hopin that the last track of quadrange knocks us for six. Janey mack, 700 words :P

Hmm, I was listening to the previews of these on Bleep and I gotta say I like them, they're not extended versions of the tracks on Quaristice for the most part.

9013-2 is awkward.

Quadrange is still on the main page of bleep today, so I guess it means that we're gonna get perlence 6-36 today...

We'll see if it's really 49minutes, and if it's what we all secretly hope it is, or not.... see you guys later !

Seems like it's the new planet mu releases on the main page now, I guess we'll get perlence 6 36 on monday then....

Ital Tek's lp is great by the way....

Guest dangulberry

I think it's obvious that the final release will be one of the long jams for Perlence, from which they edited the final version. It may be the entire jam. NOT a live set, and nothing unexpected, just an 'expanded' listen to the material behind the final album cut.

OR

not.

Hummmm.... since it's appearing on autechre.ws, that might come today then... but last friday they did put on 3 tracks ( or 4 I don't remember) to leave the place for the whole week end for the new friday realease.... Since it's not on the front page, I don't know what to think.... Anyways, we'll know more about it in 4 hours maximum.... We all have hight expectations for this last track, I hope we won't be disapointed ( I mean, if it's not a live set, or a 49 min track, at least I hope it's either a really good and different 10min version of all the the other perlences, or a great original 49min track... I just hope it's not just a 10min perlence twin brother....

i don't know how to make any electronic music.

i would like to though.

steels for me sounds like a machine flexing its muscle after barking at another machine. it sure isn't a melodic chillout track.

not that i'm a pro, or people pay me to listen to my music, but once you get into doing it, it's surprisingly fun. i love the program by ableton "live."

not cheap, though.
