Aphex Twin uses a PC?

Recommended Posts

How is aphex able to make all his tracks using a PC, I thought macs were optimised for music creation and PCs always get the blue screen of death. What do all the people who write crappy electronic music on macs think of this, since he is the god of electronic music, don't they get the point or is it that all the studios in the area are financially obliged to purchase mac equipment due to current contracts and the general smoke & mirrors advertising campaign of apple to appeal to art student across the globe

I don't see the need to get insulted by his post, the first half is as equally uninformed as the second, so what weight does it carry at all?

Anyways, the difference between Macs and PCs isn't all that large anymore, given the fact that both use the same chips (made by Intel). Back in the day, Macs used the PowerPC chip which was mainly made by IBM, and of course the architecture of a chip is really important as to how it'll perform in situations such as graphics/audio processing. In some ways Intel kept up by making sure their pure number crunching abilities were the same, but for a long time they didn't have specific architectures that made audio editing programs quicker. Things like SSE changed that, (this is one of the reasons that programs like Ableton Live 7 don't work on computers with old processors, since they take advantage of these new architectures) and of course that is one of the reasons why Macs and PCs both use Intel architecture nowadays.

Not only that, but of course the blue screen of death is long gone. I think by the time Windows 2000 came out you could work relatively well without ever getting it, so long as your hardware wasn't fucked. Really the important thing for making a solid music computer isn't the processor or OS or software, but understanding how they all work together and making sure everything is as streamlined as possible. And I'm pretty sure Aphex Twin knows how to turn off pointless services in Windows XP, etc.

I honestly think Richard uses computers (PC or Mac) about as much as he uses any of his other vintage synths or odd bits and ends he uses to make the sounds he does.

Probably used the VAIO since it's so small and easy to carry around, perfect for DJ stuff. Or perhaps his favourite software for live stuff is PC-only.

Its almost impossible to know what methods aphex uses. All I know is he owns a shit load of amazing gear. Just dunno how he pieces it all together into songs.

wat's all this then? as a busy but exacting analord, rdj simply uses whatever allows him to get exactly what he wants, in the least time. no compromise trading quality for speed... but if something's faster and doesn't compromise quality, use that. some software is mac-only, pc-only, atari st-only... the central fallacy of this thread is presuming he really gives a shit what box he's sitting in front of.
