Atop
this is what I thought of the new X Men: Reveal hidden contents Before they were the X-Men they were just a disparate collection of closeted mutants who couldn't figure out why they were born made of magnets or were cursed to walk around all blue and scaly or with gnarly feet for hands or possessed of the ability to sprout buzzy little butterfly wings in the middle of giving a lap dance in the Champagne Room. They had to find one another, come up with half-dorky/half-badass names, harness their megapowers and then battle Kevin Bacon and January Jones, that terrifying duo of supervillain mutants who were, according to this movie, the true cause of the 1962's Cuban Missile Crisis. Yes, Kevin Bacon and January Jones. Let's forget about the Kevin Bacon/January Jones problem for the moment and focus on the big picture, which is that this good-enough-but-not-great prequel is full of awesome potential. Now, the inherent problem with potential is that sometimes you have to sit around and wait for it to bloom, to hang back and chill while what you hope will ultimately become an epic story puts all its moving pieces on the table. In other words, the whole thing drags a little and focuses a bit too much on Bacon's mod Austin Powersy submarine of death when it could have been diving deeper. It made me antsy for wittier set-ups, more wow moments than were already given away in the trailer and a lot more character complexity than just showcasing their superpowers, tossing in some chips-are-down tests of their mettle and making Jennifer Lawrence angsty about having blue skin. The comic books these characters come from aren't shallow boom-pow texts and, of all the superhero franchises, the X-Men come equipped with more contemporary relevance than most. I'm still on board for chapter two but only if they promise to smarten up a bit. Okay, let's not forget the Kevin Bacon/January Jones problem. He's a fine actor but he doesn't seem like a guy you take seriously as a potentially world-destroying madman. It's not his fault that he danced so well to Kenny Loggins songs thirty years ago, but that youthful energy is still bouncing around inside him three decades later. He's gotten wirier and rangier and sharper but not heavier. And that kind of doom-threatening gravitas is exactly what's not on display here. Meanwhile, Jones, as Bacon's metallic accomplice, does everything a person cast as a human disco ball can do with that kind of role. Don't blame her just yet (if you're watching Mad Men then you know she's capable of more), blame a movie that decided all her character needed to be was pretty. I hate it when a movie set during an earlier decade gets that decade's details wrong. It's laziness, or worse, arrogance that the audience is too stupid to know any better. So here we have a movie set in 1962 during a very specific historical moment. Why, then, do almost all the male characters who aren't CIA/Pentagon background players time-traveling their heads into 2011 hairstyles? And why are the women decked out in miniskirts? Just type the name "Mary Quant" into Wikipedia and you'll see the timeline of that particular female wardrobe staple. Meanwhile, the dialogue includes very un-1962 expressions like "I'm stressed" and witty comebacks like "Whatever." And yeah, those are nitpicky details, but if you're going to make a period film then make a period film. this review was written by Dave and agreed upon fully by myself. 4/10 Thanks Haha Confused Sad Facepalm Burger Farnsworth Big Brain Like × Hide Atop's signature Hide all signatures music by ATOPdj mixes by ATOP https://woodbetweenworlds.bandcamp.com/album/777 https://auralcanyonmusic.bandcamp.com/album/once-i-was-as-you-are-now Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/43385-a-few-films-recently-watched/page/323/#findComment-1594608 Share on other sites
Guest Blanket Fort Collapse
First Class was a 8.5 outta 10 for me - I didn't think of footloose or any of Bacon's previous films at anytime watching it LOL it was a summer movie and it was a fun one. I thought there quite a few really intense, really well acted and really well directed scenes. Everything Magneto did was pure bad ass cinema gold to me, they couldn't have picked a better actor and they really used his powers to make for some great scenes. I really think your getting too nit picky ATOP, it was absolutely the most entertaining X-Men movie in my opinion. Atop
AHHH BULLSHIT! The chick playing Mystique was awful, everything she said was awful! and painful, MAGNETO WAS THE ONLY OKAY THING ABOUT THE FILM! but here are some more truth-filled reviews: Reveal hidden contents This is not the X-Men. There were once plans to do a series of X-Men Origins movies. Wolverine and Magneto were to be the first. Wolverine's got made, while Magneto's ended up becoming this film. Much of the film focuses on Magneto's journey and the events that shaped him into the villain we know, but it's mashed together with a "First Class" story which is really more of a New Mutants story masquerading as X-Men. A Magneto Origins movie could have been interesting. A New Mutants spinoff movie would have been acceptable. But to take that and call it the founding origins of the X-Men? Blasphemy, and all-around disrepectful of its source material. On top of the fact that these are not the founding members, Moira MacTaggert and Banshee are suddenly not scottish and irish (respectively), Mystique suddenly has a history with Xavier, Alex Summers has been turned into Scott Summers'...what... Dad? and the rest of the characters are lame and forgettable rehashes - a red Nightcrawler, a female Angel... But let's ignore for a moment that they've completely pissed on the X-Men mythology from the comics, and even the continuity of their own films. Let's just look at this movie as its own entity. Still a mess. James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender are sufficient in their roles, even if McAvoy just spends 90% of the film with his hand on his temple, and Fassbender spends it slipping in and out of his accent. Jennifer Lawrence is horribly miscast - not to mention bland and boring - as Mystique (Rebecca Romijn she's not), and January Jones continues her reign as the WORST ACTREESS in the history of movies. How did she get this job? It certainly isn't her acting ability, and she's not even attractive! Top all this off with a lame 60's period setting and you have the least interesting entry in the X-Men movie series so far. Is it all bad? No, there's some decent action sequences, and a great (very brief) cameo that provides a big laugh. It's just not the X-Men. Let's hope this is a one-off movie, and they come back to the present for future films, because really... who wants to see the further adventures of Banshee, Havoc, and Beast? Give us back our Wolverine, Colossus, Kitty Pride, etc... Reveal hidden contents the biggest piece of shit i have ever had the misfortune of watching. I have no idea what the director was thinking when he put this heap of garbage together...terrible Reveal hidden contents Undone by a frustrating mire of multiple plots, overreaching special effects, leaden ancillary players and world-ending military standoffs that have all the tension of a water balloon fight. Reveal hidden contents The notion of a period-piece comic book movie, which could fancifully reshuffle historical episodes, has great potential, but neither the cast nor the filmmakers aim for the sort of period detail that would have made the premise interesting. Reveal hidden contents The scene where the mutants stand on a beach and mentally duel by causing both American and Soviet missiles to shuttle back and forth in the sky is ... hilarious, I was going to say, but no, I should consider this scene more devoutly. Kenneth Branagh succeeded in making 'Thor' look like Shakespeare compared to something, and that something is X Men: A First Class Piece of Shit. Guest Blanket Fort Collapse
Well you have just successfully proven that your taste in half serious summer super action films is durr durrr retarded. There was not a single scene in Thor that gave me a movie mind boner. Thor might have had less "flaws" but it never was exciting. All of the action felt distant and boring, his warrior 3 com padres were fucking 68 hundred times more lame than the worst character scenes in First Class. The only thing about Thor that wasn't mediocre or sub mediocre was the nigga guarding the portal that never got any good scenes and the some of the shots of Asgard. Trying to give Thor any credit against First Class makes you look like a 3rd rate Dunce Cap dummy dude, sorry First Class was an extremely entertaining and at times top shelf film.
