Yeah, as was said above, the good thing about the film is Shannon being an incredible actor. I am not fond of this actress. Watched 'The Help' recently and she did a good job of acting in it, besides the film being something like Oprah turds on the screen, it was distracting that Bryce Howard was in it when they look very much alike imo. Her acting does nothing for me. Her many moments of crying and sadness in 'The Tree of Life', and being quirky in 'The Help', and being the wife who doesn't really understand her husband in 'Take Shelter', all felt and looked forced. Something about her feels ingenuine to me. Also 'Take Shelter' and 'The Tree of Life' both bore me to death. I fell asleep during 'Take Shelter' and wanted to during 'TTOL'. I was more awake for the latter I suppose. soundwave
Predator Ultimate Ed Blu-Ray - a controversial 2nd blu-ray issue of a very personal fave of mine gets a little overdone with digital enhancement which either works really well or makes Arnie look like a waxwork dummy and gives Carl Weathers a fetching smudged caterpillar above his top lip. Overall I think the enhancement does add a new angle over the DVD so if your a fan its worth buying although they cut out the skull steaming/polishing scene out for some reason. - Film 15/10, remaster 7.5 Total Recall Blu Ray - not a polished as Predator but apparently taken from the HD-DVD remaster. Again some scenes look very grainy but the fine detail makes what was the most expensive film in its time look tacky and very dated, even the technology today is better than the forward thinking gadgets in the film. Its been a while since I've seen it and I've forgotten how bad Arnie is in this film but Ironside and Cox are up there with the best bad guys ever. Verhovern's chase sequences and ott violence are welcome but I feel thrown in to spice up a very mixed bag of 80's high production. You also don't get Arines pissed up commentary like on the DVD. auxien
The Grey. 8/10. definitely enjoyable, CG wolves stuck out like sore thumbs though...they were a step away from being the big bad wolf in Neverending Story. otherwise, great. lots of great shots, acting was okay/acceptable. the whole thing seemed was very Darwinian, and there were a few small bits of almost anti-religiousness thrown in, which i'm totally okay with. worth watching in my opinion. Film 7.5/10 remaster 6/10 Schwarzenegger day at Decepticon HQ? ;) i saw a little of Total Recall the other day on tv, and despite having enjoyed the movie when i was in my teens, it has not aged well at all. i'm interested to see what the remake is going to be like; this is one of the movies that i think a remake isn't uncalled for. i'm a huge Predator fan, i may have to pick up the Blu-ray (since i only own it on VHS). can't believe they would cut the skull polishing scene; i can't even imagine why the would. it's not exactly pivotal, but it's a telling bit of info into the personalization of the Predator....hell, maybe that's why. but he was very much personalized at the end of the movie. who knows. are there lots of cool bits of extra stuff on the Predator Blu-Ray? or is it mostly just fluff? awepittance
gotta disagree with the premise that 'total recall has not aged well' , id say it's just the opposite. It makes me sad that there are no hard R big budget imaginative movies like that anymore. The only one in recent memory was District 9. vamos scorcho
this guy nailed it: DEAD BURGER "I feel like a lot of critics, even those who gave it positive reviews, may be missing the point or just not going into the film with the right mindset - a barebones plot and heavy stylization doesn't mean the movie is shallow, it's just far more subtle than most. The intelligent, deconstructionist themes are neatly tucked away into the subtext of the direction; that is to say, it's not the events that matter, it's how they are depicted. I've forged myself on interviews with Gosling and Refn and it seems clear that the film is a commentary on the glamorization of violence in cinema. Driver's job as a stunt driver shows his obsession with movies, or at least that he is deeply marinated in the culture of myth. His idolization of action heroes and their deeds informs his every move - he doesn't have much of a real relationship with Irene, but he sees her as an anti-femme fatale, projects onto her the notion of the damsel in distress, to effectively make himself a hero. This notion also pops up in the depiction of the violence, at once thrilling and sort of horrific. The lighting, the pacing, the sound all make the moments of action exciting, but when we see the look on Driver's face, it's savage and full of rage, reminding us that these things that "heroes" do that we worship in action cinema are really horrible, brutal things, and no righteous intent can vindicate that. In the end, Driver realizes the horror of what he's done, and so he drives away, both literally and figuratively leaving the story, and returning to a static neutrality. I feel like this is actually a very clear and poignant commentary, one of the best critiques we've had in a while of not only film, but of the fundamental failure of storytelling to paint an ethically or emotionally accurate picture of life and what it means to be a hero. I'm not sure how so many critics missed out on this, and I definitely don't know how you could call the film empty. And lest you say I'm merely filling in a blank canvas with my own thoughts (which is what all art is, anyway, no work can objectively say something), I should reiterate that this is all based on information I've gathered from reading interviews and talking to NWR." that quote is from the comment section http://blogs.indiewire.com/pressplay/grey_matters_drive_directed_by_nicolas_winding_refn Thanks Haha Confused Sad Facepalm Burger Farnsworth Big Brain Like × Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/43385-a-few-films-recently-watched/page/430/#findComment-1758569 Share on other sites
