A few films recently watched.

Released in 2009, but looks like it was filmed in the '70s because it was shot on Super 16 film.

It's a spoof on blaxploitation films from the '70s. Michael Jai White plays the main character, Black Dynamite, who is a Vietnam veteran/ex-CIA agent/pimp. There are deliberate inconsistencies throughout the film for entertainment purposes, and memorable lines of dialogue.

 

One of the best scenes in the movie is when Black Dynamite confronts Richard Nixon (played by James McManus). I don't want to spoil it for those who haven't seen the movie yet, but it's pretty hilarious.

 

My rating: 9/10

 

There is also an animated series based on the film which is currently aired.

Agreed, best comedy film I have seen in an age.

Man on Fire - 7/10

It's taken me years to finally see this film and it was worth the wait. Almost expected ending though.

I went to see the movie Berberian Sound Studio last night – a spooky film about a meek British sound engineer who’s hired to work on a trashy 70s Italian horror film.

I’m not much of a cinema-goer but I thought it was a cracker. Weird, funny and – for the WATMMers- tonnes of cool analogue gear porn and a soundtrack by Broadcast to boot. And Julian House worked on the graphics for all your Broadcast fans. Definitely go and see this one if you like any of the above or David Lynch. 8/10.

This Berberian Studio thing? Is it shot in a Argento-etc-esque kind of way

Nah not really. One of the film's big conceits is that you never actually see the horror film they're working on - you just hear the soundtrack and watch the Foley artists at work. It's mostly shot in a really claustrophobic David Lynch kind of way, although there are one or two scenes in that OTT Italian horror style.

Princess - very dark french animation mixed with live action 8/10

Rushmore - Murray gold - 8.5/10

The Darjeeling Limited - didn't quite know what the fuck was going on but I loved it. 9/10

Percopolis - French animated film based on Marjane Satrapi's autobiographical graphic novel of the same name. A bit long winded but you feel wiser for watching it 7/10

Flash Gordon - 80's innuendo meets camp comic book fantasy. Great cast, great soundtrack, cheesy script and seems to gets better with age - vintage/10

Cabin in the Woods - best popcorn chomper parody this year 9/10

Thirst - excellent quirky but a very well made and original film from the director of Old Boy 9/10

the ending of Thirst was pure cg-weirdness

now you know - crappy romantic comedy financed by kevin smith but never picked up for distribution. which is werid because there's a semi-known cast like jeremi sisto (at the time a regular on six feet under) and rashida jones. and it's actually well made in general. it's not like lucklaster script or not that convincing acting ever stop movies from being huge hits. i later read that movie was inspired by a matchbox 20 song, it explains a lot.

Shut Up & Play The Hits - Went to a screening of a documentary on the last LCD Soundsystem performance at Madison Square Gardens. The footage of the concerts was pretty great as was the sound (mixed by Murphy) but wasn't enthralled by the James Murphy interview segments. There was a satellite Q&A with the band after the screening and they came across as one goofy bunch.

Yeah man I think LCD Soundsystem were pretty good, sometimes excellent, but I would never actually want to see James Murphy or hear him speak. Same goes for most musicians actually (edit: but especially James Murphy). I don't see the appeal.

yeah agree on lcd film. big fan of the band but no interest in seeing.

Just saw Cabin in the Woods. Any of you guys who liked this are smoking as much reefer as the guy in the film. What a terrible, pandering movie, straight down to the expected Zombieland style "end-celebrity-cameo". 0/10, for a an idea someone clearly came up with while stoned, but then actually followed through on, held up his hands and said "look ma, I'm stoned! Isn't this all so waaaacky?"

I enjoyed Cabin in the Woods quite a bit... curious as to what you didnt like about it. I, being a huge fan of horror and the like, found it be to be fresh and highly enjoyable experience. Sure it felt a bit like a sandbox in some ways.... rules forming then breaking from scene to scene. To me it felt more like an analysis or some sort of stylized report on horror... or ... Jonathan Swift-esque take on the genre; something for the fans as it's riddled with references, inside jokes, and fine details. I guess it's part of the charm which makes viewers like myself (who have or have been obsessed with the genre) feel oh so special when we catch those little tidbits. I felt the same about Paul, a movie which can be liked/disdained on many, often polar opposite, levels.

Mmm Cabin in the Woods is a bit overhyped to be fair. It's nothing special and certainly nothing worth get your knickers in a twist about.

exactly. It could have been a single episode of a shitty new "Twilight Zone" re-boot. But it has no reason to exist as a stand-alone.

i thought it was great. zombieland too. i saw none of them stoned. if you can't appreciate campy zombie comedies i think you should stop watching them. what were you expecting, really?

zombieland was shit too, apart from the well made (but rather dumb) intro montage. The ending in the amusement part descended into utter tedium. I guess Bill Murray was a highlight, but apart from that...

The Game 9/10. Now this is good viewing!
