yeah, once you learn how to play drums (even just in a basic way) you'll become a much better drum programmer.

yeah, school band from 6th through 11th grade, with a drum set in 7th grade...

I suck now though, as I haven't played in god knows how long....

Something else I thought of--join a high school or college drum line and then you could make anything you wanted. I marched a Yamaha snare drum with a Kevlar head tuned to an ear-splitting tension. With sticks the size of logs, you could "open roll" any rhythm you wanted as fast as you wanted. I know it was a sea change in IDM for beats to suddenly get so crazy but to me, they were essentially emulating marching band snare drumming--albeit in a kick-ass way. "Boy/Girl Song" is essentially a concert/marching band track and even sounds like it too.

So true! this is what got me into electronic/idm stuff in the frist place. I was in the drum line all through high school and me and my drummer friends would get super faded and sit around in awe at the beats of early squarepusher/afx. I think I suck at programming really crazy beats though. I can get some cool grooves and stuff but I'm not so much into the chopping the hell out of stuff, I like making glitchy things.

Notice how ZAZ hasen't said anything back yet? He's obviously taking the piss out of the forum which is easy these days. Someone make a new user and start a thread about whether Reason is better then Ableton or not.

I resent that.

Be patient.

the serious answer is "flam"

this and "ghost notes" are swell too. I be flammin the shit out of some snares though. Also, I like to create an original drum beat in reason, export it as a wav, then chop it up into its individual components and rearrange them at will. It makes for a more original "drill" sound (if that's what you're going for) because you aren't simply using the same old tired loops.

EDIT: I just got home from work and my hands smell like meat. I should wash them.

Really? I'd like to hear some of your stuff.

I think its relatively obvious at this point that Aphex uses Max MSP and Csound to write all his drums and do his drum work. Download and have fun!

NO DRUM TUTORIAL!

Think beyond snare, kicks and hats. Think more along the lines of "this sounds like a snare/kick/hat" rather than "this is a snare...etc"

As for the sequencing, don't let the program restrict you. For example, in FL change the grid to 1/8th beat, sequence a pattern, keep it playing on a loop while you get that bar just right, then move on to the next pattern. When you have about 10, go to the playlist and put them in an order that feels right.

Also, drugs.

I here you.

However, I don't know where I'd start to try and make something else sound like a snare/kick/hat though.

Guest cetwing

you have fl.

go to add channel, click "fruity slicer".

go to the plugin.

click the second button from the left, right above "auto dump".

go to load sample.

open packs.

open loops.

open drum loops.

find a loop you like.

open that file.

go to piano roll.

each drum hit is like a piano key.

switch the alignment to either "1/2 step" or "1/4 step"

put a shitton of hits really close to each other.

repeat.

the end.

You're over thinking this. For example, Polynomial C is just an oldskool breakbeat looped over and over again. There's nothing that interesting going on there. Sounds like the same thing with the first tune you posted. Flim is pretty straight forward as well.

Recreate the drum tracks. Simple as that. And get some breaks. Then you'll understand.

korg legacy collection's legacycell vst has a preset

that was obviously the answer you were looking for

this sounds like an airplane landing on a minefield

on a related note, does anybody know of any drum machines with "roll" functions? in other words a button that would loop the drum sample a la drumroll, maybe faster or slower depending on how hard you hold the button or something? I think that would be a cool feature; you could use it at any point in a pattern and the sample would "roll" over the pattern, could be very useful when playing live.

it's been a while but i think the 707 had a flam setting. mine died in 02.

while it's not a true drum machine the korg pad kontrol has a roll/flam feature that works really nicely w/ the touchpad!

I guess I'm an idiot then, because I have a 707 and I've never experimented with the flam at all! Looks like it's time to read that manual again...

the 707 does indeed have flam and the useful ability to change the pattern length on the fly so you can achieve that glitch type effect by suddenly going from a 16 step pattern length to 1 step etc...

anyway, here's a picture of a sitting in 707 in my studio the other day:

so can someone tell me what kind of stuff you would be using (hardware wise) if you wanted to get a beat like in 4 or girl/boy song?

is there a proper way to do that through drum machines or samplers or would you have to use software?

barnstar.gifofficial

sup barnstar of coolness

doesn't matter what sounds or machines your using really - it's all about how it's sequenced...and I think those two tracks were sequenced with software

I have an Alesis SR-16 which is pretty cheesy in a way because of all the drum sounds that have got too much reverb on them. But you have two 'groups' that cut each other's decay off so to speak. So I can shorten the decay of a snare drum with a hi hat or anything really, very handy for those stuttery effects :)
