How can I get that fast Aphex Twin drum sound?

Recommended Posts

I think most of the drums in the RDJ album were probably sequenced using the piano roll in something like cubase, or something that has a note slicing function, its really easy to get rolls going. Draw a little increase in velocity over the series of sliced notes. takes literally 2 seconds to do something like that.

I guess I just don't know really where to start with something like that.

By that I mean sequencing fast drum selections like Aphex/Frog Pocket/Squarepusher.

Every time I try, I find myself stuck, and unable to tie the samples together to create a song.

I've tried adjusting the tempos and whatnot. Not much success...

How on earth can someone make music like this?

Tell me if I'm missing something.

doesn't matter what sounds or machines your using really - it's all about how it's sequenced...and I think those two tracks were sequenced with software

By software you're referring to written software by RDJ?

You're talking about two of the best drillnbass tracks ever made. It's not only about stutter effects and all that, they have also got brilliant breaks, so if you haven't made some proper breaks yet, it's best to do that first I reckon.

kind of what binarypulse is saying, but RDJ can lay down a beat very quick as well probably

no not necessarily

There is no secret to this. A combination of ghost notes, rolls, good samples, and good drum sequencing will give you the effect you want. It helps if you slow a song you like down and see how the drums are sequenced. Here I slowed down vordhosbn:

Good point, it is a pretty high standard you are working towards. In Mangle 11, especially around 4:30, there is a lot more going on than just break sequencing. I'm pretty sure he used an automated delay (automated the time) with high feedback on the break, or some other kind of automated loop-sampling sampler thingy, then resequenced the break. There are different kinds of delay, those who resample when changing the delay time(classic method) and those who truncate or extend(broken, digital method). I think he may have been using the broken method, delay time is so short though, its really hard to tell.

EDIT: I could be totally wrong. This is just based on my own experience sequencing breaks and delay effects. My results have often times been similar to some of the sounds I am describing, however they are far from being exactly the same.

i think the best advice is don't try to mimic aphex's sound.

if you think aphex twin made mt st michel mix in a few hours you're probably wrong. i'm sure it wasn't difficult or stressful for him to make, but something that is that absolutely brilliant does require a bit of time and thought

man those breaks are so fucking beautiful

this sounds sequenced (maybe midi) and then chopped up. then some modulation manipulation. it's sick that something like this sounds so fucking great sped up.

i just got me a toy piano from argos . when you press the keys a different animal pops up and makes a sound. I've been tinkering around for nearly an hour now but i still can't replicate kaikhosru shapurji sorabji's 'opus clavicembalisticum'

how does he do that?

have you ever listened to Mt Saint Michel + Saint Michael's Mount at 33 instead of 45 on vinyl? you could also do it in ableton or traktor. it really opens up your eyes to as how richard programs his stuff, he just uses alot of variety when it comes to the breaks mixed with fast 180+ tempos to make it sound more complex than humanly possible. I actually think he composes alot of his stuff at a slower tempo and then speed it up or pitch shift it to create the effect.
