to be honest, I haven't even completely digested it, yet. I think it's pretty good and it has some great parts... but I still get the feeling that it's like the worst thing they have done since a loooong time. but it's still good.

haven't heard it in a while actually and this thread makes me wanna hear it.

I love it. Much more so than Draft. It just feels so different from other AE releases though for some reason.... I have to be in a different mood/state of mind to enjoy it. It's kinda like I either wanna listen to AE, or AE's Untilted. It's full of energy and mood. Ipacial Section for example is just so menacing. The uber fast paced beats and rhythms always get me pumped, and I get a more energetic feel from listening to it than a moody feel like their other stuff. It's still packed with mood though, which is really cool.

i keep trying to approach it fresh, at a loud volume on open-air stereo. it seems more raw than much of the other albums. it's good loud, the sounds have a dumb physicality that seems more present than their other material. seems less refined? which is good, but is bland and excessive. feels less careful, more belligerent than previous autechre. more improvisational process, maybe? i get phantasy cravins to hear sublimit, be in a sublimitin', subspacial phantasy-rhythm/odd patternin' zone, but am rarely in a state to get inside it. too rigid. their shit is weird, i don't agree with many of the patterns but still am compelled to listen to their tracks. i think half of untilted doesn't work very effectively. but it sounds substantial at a loud volume. it's like raw material for dank dub music. crude format. it's all silver and black, and other qualities of metal and metallic vapour. sorta too monochrome and wooden cavity-scrubbing, not enough colour. and almost fluid but not quite

About the most perfect opening three tracks that can possibly be. It lulls in the middle a bit, but the last two more make up for it. Augmatic Disport is insane, but really too long.

Guest Balun!

I find it hard to listen to the album as a whole. I appreciate it best when I forget that the music is Autechre's because it helps me to stop judging constantly those songs against their previous work. I wish they would return to a more melodic phase. I miss those days. It's up to them, I don't know on what phase they were on when they wrote this last album (I can hear a lot of traces of dancehall music IMHO), but let's see with what they come up next.

  • 2 weeks later...

well, it's been a few months now since we got a new car on the road after not having wheels for a year. it needs saying, that after 8 months of Untilted as relatively low volume home listening material, i wasn't really feeling the love.

on the road however the love has blossomed and now i get this album, to the point i'm really starting to rate it as another great Ae LP.

Pro Radii and The Trees are both excellent and a mark of where Booth & Brown may be going over the next few years...that shit is wild and fucks the windows out of my little hatchback with the volume at full tilt.

or should that be full untilted/ :fear:

The Merzbow & Medium- Celsius mixes are both fucking immense. Two Bass Hit is also great. But my favourite is the Jurgen Paape TR7ARmix. Fine drum programming.

Caralaaaaaan......God is in......his holy temple........

i wanna see autechre take a radical departure from their current direction (whatever direction they're going in, or stagnancy), to take it to another level. i don't know. something unexpected, rather than refining or getting too fragmented. i'd like to hear them very minimal and spare, and less agitated

exactly what i did when i bought the cd just as it came out

listened to it in the car for around 2 months or so and now i love it

then i swaped it with ~ism for the vinyl version so he could do the same

fucking great album

I have a feeling that this is exactly why their camp has been so quiet recently.

Anyhow, I am still sorely disappointed by this album overall. I typically enjoy great craftsmanship in any art I gravitate towards. If it's apparent that something was done fairly quickly with very little forethought, I have a difficult time appreciating or respecting it. Spontenaity and instant gratification have their benefits, but overall, the general rule of thumb is: If it takes a long time to make, it was stay fresh longer, and is more likely to withstand the test of time.

This album, I think, was a necessary turn for them to make before they morph into whatever's coming, but I don't choose to listen to it that often. It's clear they had an idea, and decided to spout it out as quickly as possible, jamming something to tape in order to capture the moment, then moving on.

The live Glasglow recording though...absolutely brilliant. This is AE in their true form, as far as I'm concerned. Would rather listen to the live show than the LP any day.

It seems to me that Untilted is a quest into rythme. All the tracks seem to revolve around progressions of rythme & or their manipulation, where as Draft seemed to be an exploration into textures / sound . Notice how a couple of tracks on Untilted start off wild & glitched ( ie Augmatic / Ipacial ) then morph into a solid beat, almost backwarding their traditional production style, which from Tri is a simple start with deep progression. Almost seems they produced it backwards (Ipacial + Augmatic & LCC) bringing out the madness at the start while progressing it into something rather simple. Though some songs contradict this statement (Iera + Sublimit), that is the great thing about AE. Almost impossible to explain :getlost:

I think Untilted surpasses alot of there previous work mood wise, Draft seemed all over the place to me.
