not exactly, i mean i would much prefer Vaino wasn't in the mix here. I feel like his solo output has become pretty predictable and im not a big fan of it. I like some of his earlier minimal techno stuff under the 0 alias, but i think he's generally very overrated when doing anything non beat oriented solo or collaborating with other people.

I think it has the potential to be a lot more AE-ish than the Hafler Trio collabs though, so my hopes are up a little bit.

Have you checked out Vainio's recent Vandal EP? http://www.boomkat.com/item.cfm?id=238315

To my ears the most straightforward techno I've ever heard from him since the Pan Sonic Osasto EP.

odd = lazy record label marketing . too bad sean or rob aren't more involved in their own promotion. i see them do little to nothing to provide fans with information about upcoming stuff. i mean really how hard would it be to post a clip from this or OVersteps on the myspace page ? they took the time to change it to a new graphic..

strange

from the same link : seems like we have another drone / minimal project on our hands from this description :

Using space, silence and electronic tones these three electricians rewire your brain for a new comprehension of sound.

i don't know if this is officially from the label, but norman records usually has accurate info

fuck. I hope at least there's something that resembles beats. Either way I'm psyched to hear this shit, and the other Kouhei releases.

this is why i havent been psyched. since i have heard of this, i just assumed it was going to be like a 45 minute sine wave pitched around.

you think they actually do their own myspace?

that would be... surprising.

and cmon awe, this is just idm-superstar mentality. their promotion comes from little shits like us. slap booth or browns name on something and already there's a thousand ae fanboys preordering at first glimpse.

edit - not that psyched about this. hafler trio stuff was a big meh

Hafler Trio stuff wasn't a meh. It was just not the same musical direction as most of Ae's work. Personally I'm glad they let it all out on the Hafler instead of bottling it up inside which would inevitably result in the degradation of Ae into drone/ambience. I realize this happened with Quadrange but at least it meshed well with their music.

Personally I'm not hugely excited but I'm gunna give it a good listen regardless. Drone is not the kind of stuff you want to listen to every day, but it does have a place and time and when it's listened to there, it fucking blows me away.

I love heavy beat-oriented material as much as any one, but I'm a big fan of Mika Vainio's solo drone work. Like thehauntingsoul said, it's not really something you can listen to in your car, but under the right circumstance, especially with headphones at nighttime, his work like "The Black Telephone of Matter" can be quite an eye opening listen.

I feel the same toward Mika Vainio : beats or drones, some of his latest works were much appreciated between my two ears : Vandal, Ikuinen, Happi & Oleva. I didnt catch his latest one book/cd on Raster Noton yet. He's skilled for doing ambient/quiet tracks are still pretty physical in a way.

I'll check that out. Haven't heard of either of the other two artists on this compilation.

imprec Kouhei Matsunaga's Self VA solo CD has arrived and may be the best of the bunch. Samples soon.

I fucking hope so! *shakes fist*

According to Norman records, it looks like the releases will follow this order..

1. Kouhei/Vainoi 12

2. Booth/Vainio/Kouhei CD

3. Self VA CD

4. NHK Special 12

Collaborations on the Self VA cd include Leif Elggren, NHK, Sensational (Jungle Brothers), RLW and more.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Hafler Trio stuff, thought it was fucking wonderful. I certainly like it a lot more than Amber, LP5, Tri Rep and Incunabula. but then I'm right into my Coil and TG so it makes sense I'd dig the more spacious shit.

i understand the appreciation for the hafler trio stuff, it just sounds a bit half assed and i'm not generally into that type of stuff anyway.

as for taking it above amber, efffffffffffff u. that album is tight, one of the last few albums to really click with me.

well Coil's and Tg's 'spacious shit' is leaps and bounds more interesting than the Hafler Trio's minimalist drone output of the last 10 years. So in my mind the 2 don't really equate. I think the split collabs with Hafler Trio are some of possibly some of the most underwhelming collaborations AE could possibly do with any famous experimental musician.

i'd much rather hear Autechre VS Zoviet France, or Autechre VS Nurse with Wound, or fuck even those old unreleased demos of Autechre Vs Coil.

there's laziness and the matter of building suspense/anticipation...
