I always think of guys like Morton Subotnick, Alvin Lucier because their music is very non western, ridiculously academically rooted but very enjoyable to listen to .

Just found out he lives in the same apartment building as my coworker. She didn't really know his deal and thought I was a weirdo for getting all excited. I'd love to pick his brain, trying to see if he still does local performances/lectures at all.

he taught a few people i know who went to Mills, they claim he's very anal but that he's still a genius. i can't confirm or deny hehe

it seems silly and western?, but when i hear a song, i want it to either work towards something or have some sort of flow.

there's good noise music that does that, stuff like forcefield, and they do it without using anything like a normal rhythm or melody, it's hard to find groups like that.

I think a lot of people's first emotional reaction to noise is that it's kind of ominous, so a lot of what gets popular is wall of sound stuff that emphasizes the ominous emotional element, not stuff that realizes it can find a structure out of different noises and have fun with it

i'm a noise and experimental music lover, but let's be honest here. when you go to the very edges of music and art in general there is a VERY fine line between something that is total wankery and something that can be extremely emotionally evocative. I love Zoviet France & Throbbing Gristle but i would understand if someone heard Garista or Second annual report and said 'sounds like a bunch of idiots banging on instruments'

ie: i just did this art gallery walk in oakland, in one gallery there was an exhibit that was an electrical box with a bunch of copper wire sticking out of it in a random fashion. they were charging no less than 20,000 american dollars for this piece.

People who want interesting noise music should check out the track 'Shards' from my band Purity Device, the best quality version online is here:

We did an album length noise/power electronics EP called The Hail and I made damn certain that everything was well structured and musical in spite of the threatening content.

cannot say that i'm impressed by the samples but the latest records i bought from Mika Vainio were fantastic (Oleva, Black Telephone of matters & Vandal ep). indeed his latest cd on Touch need a few listens to be fully appreciated so i'll give them the benefice of the doubt & still have high hopes for this collab.

well for starters throbbing gristle tracks actually go somewhere, they have flow, they evolve. francisco lopez is great live as well, blindfolding the audience is a great idea that works well

a lot of minimal dare i say 'academic' (because i have heard some occasional fantastic music come out of the 'academy') is never concise and to the point. frequently obsessed with some kind of new dsp algorithm, structure, or external references that aren't accessible without a lengthy program note.. usually at the expense of the ear

Funnily enough I prefer modern TG to the 70s/80s output. I like it all but TG Now, Third Mind Movements and Part Two: The Endless Knot fucking blow me away. I think perhaps they were more revolutionary back in the day but they realize that trying to do that now is pointless due to the sensory overload that we're exposed to in everyday living now. So these days they just make fantastic evil art.

Second that, TMM is a great listen. Been addicted to it since I saw them in NYC last year. The live show was sweet too!

Just digging this thread up to say I finally listened to this yesterday and here is my review:

well it honestly depends on which Throbbing Gristle you are referring to. They have quite a bit of live and improvised studio material that is arguably very aimless and chaotic. thats part of the appeal for me.

and you are insane if you like new TG better than old TG

this just started playing on my mp3 player (random shuffle).

Had to dig up this thread to add my thoughts. I think in many ways its a lot better than the hafler trio collabs in that it doesnt meander around too much. Its not overly long and it does introduce enough elements throughout to keep me fairly interested. Parts of it remind me of cylobs nonprivate project, but certainly with less intensity and more background static.

so i just got a physical copy of this, and i'm 100% convinced they all did it as a joke. Important records fell for it.

listening to this CD in a car is virtually impossible, some of it is near inaudible. Im going to give it a proper listen on headphones to see if i change my mind
