Napoleon Dynamite (I spent the whole movie wondering what was supposed to be funny)

i suppose that's somewhat the point.

The best explanation I can come up with is that Napoleon Dynamite hit the rural middle america nerve for me. Its portrayal of that suburban life was so perfect, (the couple who really want the yacht decor when they buy the tupperware, the presence of tetherball and lanyards, goodwill....) it all just added up to an immense pastoral portrait in a sad way. And thats the idea behind the movie: a case study in losers. complete losers. Every character in that movie is utterly pathetic, yet in their own unique way. For me the movie was too close to home (not my house but certainly my town and state) for it not to be funny, and when you add a large absurdist deadpan streak (the time machine subplot, the throwing of fruit, kip's girlfriend) to me it makes a absolutely hysterical movie.

I can see how people were put off by it. It made a huge merchandising splash, and suddenly it seemed cool to be hatin on Napoleon, as quotes and t shirts were commonplace in 04. My hope is that in a couple of years people realize what a truly excellent movie this is.

all the things it sparked really ruined it

not if you just watch the movie and don't listen to what hot topic has in their storefront.

couldn't agree more.

to me its similar to those who fail to find King of the Hill funny.....you just have to understand that culture to really get it....something only living around it for years can tell you perhaps.

My wife likes Napoleon Dynamite, but I concluded recently that it is one of the most depressing movies I've seen.

His parents are missing and he lives with his brother and grandmother (suggesting his parents are possibly dead) and neither of his family members really care about him, he lies to kids at school to be impressive, and fails to create the cool exterior he thinks he exudes. He happens to make quasi-friends with a new kid, and throughout the film his lying becomes less exaggerated to the point where he risks looking like an absolute moron to give his sort-of friend a chance at becoming a class officer. The concept is moving, but the performances don't lend the concept any credit.

grizzly man is a fucking fantastic film. It made me laugh and cry at the same time and I left feeling like I had experienced both man and animal as well as nature at their most extremes. I'm am a dolt and Werner Herzog has more talent and creativity in his fingernail than I could ever dream of containing in my pathetic faculties.

but now that we're on herzog, rescue dawn was fucking pathetic. perhaps i was biased cause I had already seen the original, Little Deter needs to fly, (which btw is fuckin brilliant) and did not want to see bale acting out the scenes of death and drag that deter himself had described with such intensity and honesty. It was hopeless

i feel your pain. i was in a massive state of hysteria anticipating this film

and it just didn't quite do its justice. i was still entertained though. i would

not go as far as to say it was bad if put against truly bad films that i have seen,

but in herzog territory i give it low marks.

did you see 'Lessons of Darkness' Dr lopez? a very visually striking and

thought provoking film by herzog. subtle narration and beautiful

music's with fly-over documentation of the aftermath

of the iraq war. stunning.

i will now watch the original rescue dawn

At least Bad Lieutenant 2. Bad Lieutenanter looks fucking hilarious.

Also, I'm going to jump on the Crash hating bandwagon. When that movie was done I called up the friend that recommended it to me and yelled at him.

Lord of the Rings trilogy.

I didn't like them, although they might not totally suck...

www.petergaber.com is where I keep my paintings. I used to have a kinky tumblr, but it exploded.

[*]The Wicker Man remake

Wa wa wee wa that was some hunk of shit alright. But then again it shouldn't have been even contemplated.

I will admit I had very low expectations for it given who was involved but it managed to sink below them.

into the wild

grizzly man

woe man. stop right there.

i must disagree with you there.

especially 'Into The Wild'. i don't want to start a beef,

but it was brilliant.

...and that dude in grizzly man was flipped out, but he

was questioning some things in nature and stepping into the

unknown. sad but, bless him for pushing into those issues so hard

...and 'Werner Herzog' is one of my favorite directors.

that scene where dude sets up the camera

and goes on the rant about bears eating

their cubs, fucking brilliant, the sheer

emotion. that dude was a bit weird, but he was inline.

grizzly man is a truly unique experience.

right, i had no problems with the production values of the movie (into the wild), nor the acting talent of the main character, which was pretty impressive, but instead i just sat there, through the whole movie, wondering why i should care or feel for this spoiled brat gone naturelover as he slowly committed suicide.

now, it's been about two years since i saw the movie, so i don't remember much (since it failed to make an impact on me), but from what i do remember, i just sat there thinking "i don't care what happens to this dumbass, suit yourself for fucking with nature".

with grizzly man it was pretty much the same thing, only it's real, which makes things so much worse. not only did he manage to lure his girlfriend into his mess, it ended up with her being eaten alive by bears. this fucking guy, argh, the shots where he sits there speaking babyspeak to the bears, like he's their friend. im pretty sure he was nothing but a burden, and ultimately just dinner for them. what right did he have to interfere with their lives anyway? and again, why the fuck would anyone care what happens to him? suit your damn self.

damn, these movies does nothing but piss me off.

Napolean Dynamite: all that has to be said is it was made by Mormons, takes place in Idaho, can't be explained to anyone who didn't see it, and was tainted by every kid who bought and wore a "Vote for Pedro" shirt.

It's also, in retrospect, a G-rated version of the Tim and Eric show.

i agree with crash. i watched it and thought i had watched the wrong movie.

I found Grizzly Man strangely compelling, because it was real. Yes he was a nut and yes he dragged his girlfriend into it and yes it is rubbernecking, and he is so bloody annoying in it (Mr. Fox would have got a shoe up the hole from me) but thought there was something fascinating about it. It's a simple tale, man goes off to find bears, tries to befriend them, whole thing backfires, but told well.
