I just heard yesterday that these things, while the tweakability factor is great, they are prone to failure. Also I guess the onboard fx are not so good. I'm talking out my ass though cuz I never played one yet, just going by word of mouth. They certainly look nice tho....

Thanks for telling me, though, I'll do a fair amount of research before just dropping 3K on something that will fart once and never work again.

Only some are prone to failure, There was like this giant bad batch of lemons but iirc the last batch they made was okay. A lot of andromeda users have never had ANY problems with theirs, while others have had voices die, stuff generally break, or had certain aspects of the synth just never work. The people that still have andromedas will swear by them and tell you it is the greatest modern analog synth in the world. It is a fantastic beast if you just listen to sound demos. There is other stuff i would rather have, but if i needed a thick modern poly analog and had the cash i would surely get an andromeda.

the probs with the andromeda seem to be hit and miss, but the people that get hit by them are obviously very upset since the andromeda is VERY expensive and also heavy (costing a bit to ship if you need repairs)

if you are serisouly considering one signup to analogue heaven or the andromeda yahoo group (if it'sstill around) and ppl can likely tell you which serial numbers to avoid.

this is great advice, i'm hoping to pick one up next year sometime so this should help me out alot.

as for abusivegeorge, instead of diving right into fruity loops and going crazy with trying to understand everything and trying to create your own music where you probably have no idea what you're doing, i would instead go with DJing with traktor, and then from there branching out into composing eventually. DJing and mixing is a great way to start off and to get the basics down. i would definitely start off with traktor instead of ableton live. and also get the vci-100, check out this video. djtechtools.com is a great site, they have tutorials and stuff

what has traktor got to do with learning how to make music?

i don't understand your question. i just think DJing and mixing maybe even some 'controllerism' would be better suited to abusivegeorge and more fun that fruityloops or reason or whatever for him

i assumed from this thread that george was interested in making music

what is there to not understand about my question?

it's like someone going on a builders forum and saying "hey guys i want to build a house, where do i start?"

and someone called Chax replying "become an estate agent"

i totally get what you're saying, but 'making music' is really subjective and can include many different methods. plus abusivegeorge mentioned in another thread a few weeks back he wanted to get into DJing so I thought i'd try to help him out perhaps give him some ideas. i didn't understand your question because the context still doesn't make a lot of sense to me, but whatever

well u can actually dj in FL studio, as i believe it comes with a scaled down deckadance. So FL seems the best idea. He can use reason inside of it, traktor or deckadance or whatev dj prog, inside of it, and it comes with loads of stuff. Or he can lay tracks out on different tracks and make a "dj mix" without actually mixing

edit: your av is awesome chax :)

yeah i'm kinda confused too, as dj'ing and actually creating music (outside ofhiphop) are on opposite ends of the spectrum. Illuminate us

edit: that sounded kind of prude, don't mean to come across that way :)

ok so are you saying djing in traktor is a form of "making music"?

i just don't understand how my question can be misunderstood

it's just too complicated right now, i'll try to figure this out later :sorcerer:

it's not important that you understand how your question was misunderstood, only important that it was misunderstood.

it's ok . chax cleared this up via pm.

george.... my best advice is DO NOT ACCEPT ANY ADVICE FROM CHAX REGARDING MUSIC MAKING

mother FUCK YOU i was trying to help george and you have to start all this elitest bullshit, no wonder nobody posts anything serious in EKT from how they treat people here

Guest abusivegeorge

LOL @ where this went to. Guys I'm extremely appreciative of ALL the replies and help here. I'm still working through stuff at the minute and am having rather a busy/hectic/eventful/fun/painful week. Update at the weekend.

well I think George should definitely become an estate agent who runs a mobile disco on the weekends. This will surely give him the best grounding in music making. He should also buy a Glockenspiel to help understand the basic principals of synthesis.
