fair enough if you dont like drukqs, but i've never understood how anyone thinks it sounds like a rehash of old stuff. or is it just the kind of haphazard sequencing that makes people think that?

i mean, he'd never done anything like it really... the whole hab/rdj/ctd/windowlicker thing was so different - the percussion much more clunky and glitchy.... those sort of jolly melodies. a really childlike atmosphere.

and then drukqs is so serious and moody. really streamlined and 100x more detail. in a way he was more getting back to his earlier records melodically but it's... so much more mature (for better and worse).

I will third this opinion.

I had been listening to his earlier stuff recently and was going off it a bit - except for the SAWs. But I put Drukqs on the other day and I found it fascinating and an absolute joy to listen to. It shits on so much other electronic music from a great height - both the intricate drill tracks and, perhaps less so (but only a little less so) the beautiful piano tracks. There's so much detail and depth in there - and the ambient moments are also a lot more special than I remembered.

Come To Daddy, ICBYD and the RDJ albums are all good, but I often find moments in tracks (or entire tracks) a bit too underdeveloped to fully enjoy. Drukqs, though a little bit sprawling and not without its mediocre moments, generally sounds so much more mature and much darker (in an attractive way) than any of his other non ambient releases. But while being in some ways more restrained and "adult" than those older releases, it's also far more manic and deranged. Those explosive moments in the drill tracks for example - they make my brain melt and they make me wonder how on earth this album came out in 2001. I haven't heard better "drill n bass" or breakcore or IDM or whatever you want to call it since.

yeh, i find most tracks pre-Drukqs have a main theme/sound which stays consistent through most of the track.

However Drukqs manages to constantly evolve with massive split second contrasts - whilst still maintaining the tracks fundamental character - absolute genus.

to be fair though, pre drukqs his tracks weren't really meant to be archtypes of technical accomplishment, they're just great tunes with interesting melodic and rhythmic activity. one thing I've noticed about rich's music is that he has a knack for coming up with brilliant and deceptively simple melodies. just listen to hedphelym, tha, 4 and fingerbib to get what I mean.

word! simple melodies, but the sounds he's using make them really interesting and awesome (the fast drukqs tracks are a good example for this imo).

yeh his way of making 3 repeating notes so interesting will always amaze me! :aphexsign: *thinking of the early classics stuff, thru to druqks - the melodies are very simple, yet fucking incredible*

I'm actually quite heartened to see so much Druqks love in here because TBH I've been avoiding that album for nearly 10 years now. A friend had this theory that the more of an Aphex stan you were when it came out, the less people liked it. I think so many of my friends were so o_0 WTF?!?!? about it when it came out that it put me off ever wanting to hear it and have my opinion of Aphex ... sullied isn't the right word. But I didn't want to hear something that would put me *off* him when I was still of two minds about him at the time.

That has nothing to do with anything and I don't know why I typed it now, but I might as well hit post anyway.

Aphex stan

why do you keep saying this

Because it describes a very specific kind of super-fan i.e. the kind that joins messageboards to talk about the object of their fandom, who have expectations of their fan-idol and their output. It's not intended as an insult, just a descriptive of a kind of person in order to separate them from casual fan.

i wouldnt be suprised if a lot of the reason for actually releasing analord/the tuss was to try and subtly influence the music scene. especially with some of the new things on rephlex - it seems like he likes creating an approach and then fostering other people's takes on it.

maybe he already saw the shockwaves that Analord sent through the electronic music scene and liked how influential it was to production, wanted to hone it even more specifically for the Tuss

well that's why i said for better and worse... the older stuff at its best has this sort of nativity and simplicity (all the pre-1995 stuff especially) that makes it sound really free and egoless. that's why something like saw85-92 has become a classic - it doesn't sound forced whatsoever. in a weird way, you almost can't really think of someone as having written it.

but just like you can't keep acting like a child your whole life, things have to change... and i think that's what drukqs was - just trying to completely overthrow that and make that most detail-strewn, convoluted music possible. a kind of summation of that approach.

now with analord and the tuss - it's unashamedly connoisseurs' music. made by someone who's been making music for a long time now and is less concerned with being at the cutting edge. it just sounds like he wanted to hear a specific kind of music and so... made it.

i think that's why he doesn't really release as much now (11 analords aside i guess)... i think he just has less to prove and so doesn't feel the need to document his music so much in public. no doubt he's still making a lot of music and i'm he'll keep releasing things every now and then... but i think after a while of having that level of fame, you realise who actually cares what other people think?

i wouldnt be suprised if a lot of the reason for actually releasing analord/the tuss was to try and subtly influence the music scene. especially with some of the new things on rephlex - it seems like he likes creating an approach and then fostering other people's takes on it.

I agree. The Analord series sounds like he is making music for himself and letting us in on his own little world.

he even signed monolith for getting close to the tuss sound, and wisp got signed for making a tuss soundalike too.

there was an interview where he said he released music that fills the gaps, stuff that people aren't doing, and after people start creating similar things he changes.

ZOMG! Lazerz pew pew pew!!!!11!!1!!!!1!oneone!shift+one!~!!!

also that quote from becket is ooooold

last year

saying "definitely going to be a new album... and hopefully this year"

so that seems pretty set in stone to me... just not when exactly its coming out... but i'd imagine sometime this year.

statements of the kind were being thrown around in the pre-tuss era, so nothing is set in stone.

are u saying that he just waits around until someone creates something similar to his stuff and then only releases his own stuff that is significantly different?

we all act on spontaneity in our everyday lives, and i'm sure richard is no different. all his tracks come from spontaneous ideas, emotions, and sensory data he experiences in his everyday life. how music should be treated.

Only I think he is a genius, in his own weird little way.

I remember an interview for Drukqs where he said he always wants his music to convey emotion, but you're not exactly sure what emotion you're feeling. That's a really good point, and that's why these WATMM featured artists have opened up a vault in my mind. Cool!

All I know is I would like to see more eccentric crazy tunes like Ziggomatic 17, St Michael, Cymru Beats, and Omgyjya. Could listen to such music for the rest of my days...such beauty in those tracks.

Because he is not making music for you, my egocentric friend. He makes music because he likes. And believe that you are lucky for having so much from richard.

for 5 years we've been getting a lot of analogue stuff. i don't mind that, but i'm hoping for more drukqs type insanity like others have mentioned.

well another drukqs ten years after wouldn't really constitute as 'insanity' would it?

well he wouldn't be revolutionising anything. i just want a change of pace

Of course he's a genius.

He's a genius of LUUURRRVVVEEE.

Imagine for a moment what it's like to be Mr Twin. With everyone constantly shouting at him GO ON REINVENT MUSIC AGAIN YOU CUNT!!! every time he goes to the loo. Wouldn't you just want to kick back and make music just to entertain yourself instead of having to meet other people's expectations of you? I think he won't release another album until he thinks that no one cares any more, or no one is paying attention any more.

So if we all just turn our backs and go "Album? What album? Who cares? We don't know nothing about no stinking album" then Mr Twin will leap out from behind a tree while we're not looking and leave a lovely pile of steaming musiks for our eardrums.

Yes. Let's close all the threads about the new album and let's discuss only pre-drukqs material. Let's. There aren't enough threads about each and every SAWII song and AB3's tracklist. Oh, and let's not forget the various bands and bedroom artists that have covered Avril 14th. Let's. Why not speculate some more on which UI releases are of Richard's hand and if CAT023 is ever going to be unearthed, yes unearthed (I'm playing Mass Effect). And by the way who made that cool "gangster rap" tune at the beginning of the Windowlicker video and how many windows does that limo have anyway? Let's discuss why Alberto Balsalm is in everyone's top 5 list of favorite Aphex tracks. Let's talk about the overpriced vinyl release of HAB2. Let's talk about how ignorant people are for thinking that "Outside Kickass Violin Solo", "Techno Tetris" and "Star Wars remix" are not tracks by RDJ and last but not least: let's have one more discussion, for old time's sake, about heat and night. Let's.
