Aphex Twin newbie

People may have noticed me posting similar "newbie" topics in several sub-forums-I apologise!

So, as of yet I haven't actually heard anything from Aphex Twin (at least, not that I can remember).

Anyway, i feel like buying some new (to me) music on impulse*

At a store I was browsing, I noted these as the cheapest (€5.65 each)

-Ventolin / Remixes

-Window Licker

-Donkey Rhubarb

-Girl / Boy

-On EP / Remixes

And "Come To Daddy (8 Track EP)" was €6.61

(sorry if the titles are slightly off, I c&p them from the site)

Would any of these be suitable "beginner" releases? Or would it be better to spend a bit more? Sorry to seem like a stinge....I'm a student without a job :p

*granted, it's not really impulse as such, just buying something without sampling it.

Ahh.. well, In that case I would go for the Come To Daddy 8 Track EP, because the track Flim was my first Aphex track ever.

I like Window Licker (especially for the Nannou track), Donkey Rhubarb and Girl / Boy.

Lay off the Remixes for now ;-) Not that the're not good.

To bad there's no option for the 'Richard D. James' - album, that a good one to start with.

Windowlicker and Come To Daddy EP would be my first two choices. Come To Daddy was actually the first thing I bought of his and it 'sploded my mind, as the only other thing I heard was his Nine Inch Nails 'remix' on Further Down The Spiral - so I was expecting slow ambience like material, but then the Pappy Mix of Come To Daddy kicked in and I was like -

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

Come to Daddy. Easily!

Problem with these threads is that they aren't any help whatsoever. You get a dozen or more different opinions. So you are back to square 1 my friend.

Come to Daddy

Also, yeah, Richard D. James album even though you didn't mention it - great introduction to Aphex that won't challenge your brain too much if you've never listened but will also give you a good sense for his sound.

Then say fuck it and jump into Drukqs.

Also, you seem to be limiting yourself to the "Aphex Twin" moniker. Check out some AFX too, probably more accessible at least, and to my ears, just as good or sometimes better. And among "Aphex Twin" releases you can blindly buy any of the two "Selected Ambient Works", although they may be a tad more expensive than what you've listed in your first post, they're absolutely essential.
