Come to Daddy's an excellent first RDJ release because it has so much variety. The tracks are, in order: loud and abrasive; beautiful; weird; nice but clangy, then weird towards the end; stuttery; weird; very weird; beautiful. Once you've listened to it a few times and decided which tracks you like and which you don't, you can work out which of his other releases to get based on that.

Selected Ambient Works 85-92 is another good album to ease you into his work, but then it's all pretty samey so you'll either like all of it or none of it, pretty much. With Come to Daddy, there's at least a good chance you'll like some of it, whatever your taste.

come to daddy is a pretty fukn amazn.

Either start on that or start early and make your way up. Grab some caustic window, then SOSW, then SAW, then ICBYD, etc up to drukqs which I consider to be the most revealing album of all.

I was under the impression that afx was just anoter name for Aphex Twin? :/

That is the case. Just the record store could have listed the AFX-releases somewhere else, and AFX - Hangable Auto Bulb is in some ways similar to Come to Daddy, pretty different tracks on one ep.

^agree with all (although I gotta say I love both Selected Ambient Works and yes they are essential)

Note: Most Caustic Window tracks are very harsh and not all that versatile. I wouldn't recommend it to someone looking to get into Aphex Twin, but to someone looking for that specific type of music.

Hi dude, i would also recommend getting "Donkey Rhubarb" for Pancake Lizard as it is an amazing track. ON EP is also very good. I would have to agree both selected ambient works albums are ESSENTIAL Aphex albums that contain all genious music and NO FILLER. saw1 was what got me into aphex. RDJ album is great obviously but i think it is less accessible and not as easy listening as the SAW releases.

Come To Daddy - best intro to afx imo

2 remixes by afx - two of the best things he's ever done

Richard D James Album - Classic Masterpiece of his slower less dancey stuff (it's kind of a strange angle on acid imo)

Polygon Window - Surfing On sine waves - to work your way into the next one easily

then move on to Selected Ambient works 85-92 - to hear the emotional and spatial beauty he can bring

then listen to windowlicker a lot - for mind blowage akin to come to daddy

then absorb into Selected Ambient works Vol. II - for come down after windowlicker all the time

then listen to everything else

I started with the 'Girl/Boy Song,' then just downloaded the discography...

I would probably start with Girl/Boy and RDJA (which in America, happen to have been issued as one disc, so it's an EP and a full-length for the price of the full-length).

It took me months to actually get into Drukqs, and that was after I had come to absolutely love most of Richard's work.

On was my first, which was then followed by drukqs. I was still on a high from drukqs when somebody introduced me to SAW 85-92, and that sealed the deal.

I now have all of his stuff, and I love 99% of it.

From that list I'd say Windowlicker, On and Come To Daddy. Not all necessarily my own favourites but they're three quite varied and might give you a good intro to some of his different styles (including a bit of ambient with the 28 Mix of On, that IS one of my favourite Aphex thingies). They're quite accessible as well, and could help you ease you in.

Heh  I actually got into the electronic music scene pretty late, not having the internet till about 2000, my only source of an alternative electronic music scene was Future Music magazine (and in hindsight to say that their coverage was somewhat limited is a bit of an understatement)! So in the late 90s the most adventurous I got was Orbital's Middle of Nowhere and Underworld's Beaucoup Fish (and Moby's 18, but lets not go there).

This place and the wonders of Audiogalaxy, Morpheus and the original Napster opened my mind to 'proper' electronic music, so the early part of the last decade was when I went on a spending spree and bought the back catalogue of so many artists.

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

Would any of these be suitable "beginner" releases? Or would it be better to spend a bit more? Sorry to seem like a stinge....I'm a student without a job :p

how about buying digital tracks/albums from Bleep.com. You'd save on shipping costs!

I recommend "Surfing on Sinewaves" and the "Caustic Window" compilation.
