I'm a big fan of both and listen to them extensively. However, I think they are anything but a like. Both are very different, unique and good. Anyone who says anything other wise is smoking crack.

Like the saying goes. Is like comparing apples and oranges. Both are fruit both with their own taste.

haha at least he generates CONTROVERSY do most idm artists even get to the point of people having a strong opinion about them CARING about them - I don't know about you guys but I sort of miss having strong feelings about things in either direction, or even hearing about other people who do! hell if I wanted to feel something regardless of what feeling it was I'd listen to Linkin Park or something way before listening to http://www.last.fm/music/SubtractiveLAD SubtractiveLAD SubtractiveLAD

if subtractiveLAD is actually cutting edge innovative idm artist with his finger on the pulse of the idm scene I'm sorry for singling him out like that

but admittedly I initially only cared because I suddenly found this dude who was churning out like 3 psuedo-aphex twin albums a year

^I think I agree with you. 95% of the things I hear that get labelled "IDM" I find to be incredibly formulaic & derivative. Which is ironic for a genre that was supposedly founded with innovation in mind. VSnares, while pretty samey most of the time, at least does songs I find interesting & that have a distinct style. That's what most IDM needs, I think - more flavour.

How can you listen to that and not like V Snares.

As said, at least the guy has his own style, despite a lot of his material being really similar, it's obviously his.

i also read somewhere that aphex was influenced by greg hates car culture before making drukqs anyhow who really gives a fuck!

is this true?

Not sure to be perfectly honest! seem to remember reading it somewhere but cant think where, and may have imagined it! would have a serach to see if i could find it but cant really be arsed!

Either way its defo true that snares was doing stuff before drukqs so to say his whole carrer is based on trying to copy drukqs is just stupid!

Obviously, EVERY electronic artist is influenced somewhat by Aphex Twin. And if you read these threads, you'll realize that every new artist is in fact Aphex doing work under an alias. All electronic music was created by AFX, no one before, no one after. AFX and only AFX. These artists signed a deal with Mr. James to release his music under a name they choose, and all they give him is their SOUL! (which he eats) And of course Aaron Funk copied Richard's fast Drum & bass tracks that were ALL in 7/4.

U wanna know what's even more sad than the above post? The face that I check this forum for some Aphex News EVERY DAY. And this is the kind of thing that's on here. At least VSnares IS Releasing albums, Touring, and Creating. That for sure is not copying RDJ.

True, but his stuff before DrukQs was really different to what came after it. printf("shiver in eternal darkness/n"); sounds really different than the VSnares we know today. And I read that interview he's talking about. The influence is pretty significant for sure.

I think the guy is brilliant, and has done several albums worth of amazing tracks. You just have to sift through some samey stuff.

Fair enough, anyways were there any albums by other artists that were kind of like drukqs before drukqs was out?

Aphex: Drukqs (Album) ◄ (13 versions) Warp Records ... 2001

Snares: Doll Doll Doll (Album) ◄ (3 versions) Hymen Records 2001

Aphex releases Drukqs and Snares churns similar LPs for years to come. If they are as good as druqks can be discussed. For me they are not. But as Snares does not stop Aphex has to do something new to not get lost in a flood of druqks copycats. So he develops analord.

Aphex: Analord 01-11 ◄ (3 versions) Rephlex 2005

Snares as Last Step: You're A Nice Girl (12") Planet Mu 2005

... some other releases by last step

Snares as Last Step: 1961 (Album) ◄ (3 versions) Planet Mu 2008

So what basically happened here: Snares again copied the analord style and started mass production but as he is not as good as aphex in synth programming (and not owning unique expensive synths) he is not able to deliver the same quality. I guess aphex knew this as you could hear it in the snares releases before.

Aphex: Rushup Edge (Album) ◄ (3 versions) Rephlex 2007

Snares: My Downfall (Original Soundtrack) (Album) Planet Mu 2007

Snares releases My Downfall as he knew he had no chance to the new fusion by aphex (analord quality syths + better idm arrangement) so snares uses classic sample libraries instead to keep track and as he knew it worked really well with Rossz Csillag Alatt Született.

what do you think about these statements? I know many releases in between are not listed here but I wanted to show examples that are quite obvious. Still I have to say I like some releases by snares very much and its not a topic to flame snares its just something that came to my mind.

analord comes from various things... detroit... chicago... cornwall... death of james stinson... aphex talent/feelings...

aphex + venetian snares were m8s by email etc... even aphex name drops venetian in an interview.... basically venetian snares' music was unpopular in many ways... people found it too harsh but after the name drop more ppl (watmm/xltronic) spent more time trying to get into it... theres mutual respect and friendhsip between those two guys (imo)

dont think it was a copy... FUCK VST was argued before ne1 heard analord... snares aint just copying analord... it's not fair to him and not exactly true... he was enjoying new ceephax releases before that.... mrsnares has deep taste and knows a lot about electronic music. but it is true that he didnt understand analord properly (in my opinion)

from 2003 to 2005 there was planet-mu chatroom on soulseek... aphex and venetian snares both chat there.....many other people too..... many arguments man.... about future of music.... analogue synth//recording/ceephax blah blah brutal/trolling blah balh everyone angry

best way to sum it all up is this: who emailed venetian snares many times asking him to release music for his label? was it: Mr T, Richard D James, or Felix the Cat? And who said no\? was it aaron funk, venetian snares, or last step???????

Really?

Here's a thread on the Renoise forums which will give you more intel on Venetian Snares' Last Step pseudonym. He makes about 4 replies (as Snares), mentions a few artists that could be recommended when you like the Analord series and his own Last Step. :) Edited by vincentvc
