to sum it up and to answer your question directly, either the CIA director believed Mubarak was actually going to go (non cynical view) or he tried to sway the media coverage into giving the supposed Mubarak step-down speech more weight in order to take some energy out of the protests (cynical view) of course these aren't the only two possibilities, just the ones that come to mind. The CIA and Whitehouse have egg on their faces now and are quickly jumping back on board the anti mubarak side claiming he didn't keep his promise. (mind you these are all very recent, within the last 4 hours developments, after Chaosmachine posted that, he made his speech and it was clear he wasn't actually stepping down as assumed)

in case you missed it -

CAIRO - Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak appears poised to cede power after 17 days of massive citizen demonstrations, with the country's military saying the longtime leader would meet protesters' demands and CIA director Leon Panetta saying Mubarak could step aside as soon as Thursday night.

edit: and to clarify, my personal view is the cynical one

Probably more on the side of, he has no idea what is going.

If that's the case then why make this announcement? He knew by doing this the entire world media would report on his public statement. Seems extremely irresponsible at the very least

So does this mean the CIA along with Mubarak just tried to smoke screen the Egyptian People into discontinuing the protest? *claps* good job guys, really really cool of you

alternatively, the CIA knew he wouldn't step down, and spread a false message of hope ahead of time, in an attempt to incite violence via the ensuing disappointment.

Because even people in powerful positions are too self-absorbed to keep their mouths shut? Dunno.

That sounds more like the CIA I know...

can we stop facepalming in response to absolutely everything. it's as bad as calling people you don't agree with "haters".

i know, the name for me is too similar not to find it funny. Next possible conflict in this, the march is going towards the presidential palace i think as i type this. Apparently the guards that surround the palace are not aligned with the same military agenda as the rest of the command, so it seems a definite possibility we could see another wave of violence, this time could be more intense. Have to give props to Rachel Maddow again who continues to be the only american mainstream media show giving all the necessary details and scope of what's going on.

Guest mohamed

the bastard now relies on the fact that people call him a puppet.

obama says he's with the people. so he won't resign, cos he says he doesn't take order from the outside. simple math.

there's no hidden, huge, obscure power. simple math. the one that can get the people too.

if there will be blood, it's going to be blood in america, and israil too.
