well Aphex Twin is a great starting point, but ruling out the potential talents of others isn't the way to go. he just gets more exposure than others, and that makes him seem like a benchmark artist, when really he doesn't have to be.

and i'm not doubting he's a pioneer, he totally is.

he was a pioneer and a lot of his success is due to blagging NME with bullshit to reach a chin scratching audience rather than glow sticks in the early days and then later owing a lot to Chris Cunningham

  • Brian Eno - Apollo: Atmospheres & Soundtracks

writing over ps3 controller sucks

anyway, just realized, if you haven't already, you are OBLIGED to check Eno's On Land

It's as essential an ambient album as Selected Ambient Works 2

Give Bochum Welt a listen then, may be more of your cup of tea, Robotic Operating Buddy would be a great start.

seriously, this too^ nobody ever mentions him

I agree, he and RDJ have made really similar "folk-y" IDM (I'm struggling to find a better description), the kind of nostalgic stuff on Drukqs and the RDJ album. People seem to seek out other techno virtuosos.

hell, that's the best way i could put it. and his older music is just so weird, you HAVE to hear it before you die

While I agree with everyones recommendations in this thread. The thread is now just "Recommend me good music". Which is so lazy on the OP's part.

If you spent 5 minutes browsing music discussion you'd have loads of recommendations.

Tbh I'm just looking for some widely acknowledged masterpieces like Lifeforms that also have a critical consensus. I asked here in the hopes of weeding-out anything but the best of the best from people with roughly similar tastes to mine. The problem is it seems most of you don't consider Aphex Twin the best of the best - I wasn't expecting that! Still, I am liking what I've heard so far, even if Allmusic doesn't think much of many of them...

If it helps, I consider Aphex as ONE of the best for sure, but it would be unfair to call him THE best.

About two years ago, many users would still have told you "there's no one as good as him" etc, but I think most people got tired of his everlasting monopoly considering he hasn't really done anything to keep up in 10 years. Not to be disrespectful to his work which no doubt is amazing, but still, there's plenty of other talented musicians around that keep exploring and pushing the boundaries and it never hurts to have an open mind towards them.

It's seems very juvenile to me to have one artist as a measuring stick to rate all other artists. It's something an overzealous teenage fanboy would do. Much better to keep an open mind about things and judge an artist on their own merits and if you like them or not. Use your own mind and not what some over-opinionated douche thinks of something on some internet blog.

I just meant 'as good as' loosely to mean 'if you regard Aphex Twin highly, what else do you regard highly?'...

rdj is like the epitome of prolific. it's different with him since he has such a huge variety of awesome and unique music in different genres and styles. who else can you really equate to that? when you think of a popular band in the charts or something, they all have a sound. with people like rich, you have no idea what it will sound like but you know it'll be awesome. that's pretty unique. i think that's what it comes down to.

I'm not here to make suggestions, or to really comment on this thread (eh em, dumb) although some good posts have been made in response to it

Anyways noticed a theme between some of the users 'don't really know who Cylob is...' popped up a few times. He's not the best by any means but has made some sick tracks, and is also a friend of Richards, read that they used to share tracks and such, Cylob being signed ot rephlex back in the day.

The track that always comes to mind when I think of Cylob, I'm sure others agree:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hdvnNAZ4kyA

"we r controlled by the most boring cunts imaginable" -rdj

Some Seefeel/Clifford stuff, as good

µ-Ziq of course, the first albums

Sun Electric's Present, very good

An ambient track that will split your face : x-103 - Thera, better than most of SAWII

First Autechre albums, Amber especially, Anti & Anvil Vapre EPs super especially

if you're more into "idm" : Gareth Clarke LP, impressive

or Jega's Spectrum, nice (and a small fave, original track Red Mullet)

Passarani's 22nd century or Monomorph's Alternative Fluid (d'arcangelo), nice

Some early Speedy J (de-orbit or Ginger album)

Obscure & original Anthony Manning

Some Bochum Welt

etc
