I detest that phrase in particular for some reason. The over-use of the word 'epic' drives me up a fucking wall. I physically cringe every time I hear it. Almost as much as when someone actually says 'omg' (As in oh-em-gee) or 'lol' or 'wtf.' Yeah some guy said "lol" IRL and I was so tempted to slap him right in the face... christ the guy is around 23-24... give me a break I've never been part of the 'epic' gang, but I still hear them at least once a week. It's very sad and purveys a broad spectrum of people (but notably all under 30yrs). I have caught myself saying 'lol', but only when I've already seen/heard the funny thing and I can't fake-laugh anymore. A sigh 'lol'. Guest rumbo
I was just listening to a podcast and the guy said "nitch" for niche. It reminded me of this thread and is another pet peeve of mine. I've always heard it pronounced "neesh". I heard Bill Maher take Obama to task on his show for pronouncing Taliban as "Tul-eh-barn" instead of the American way "Tally-ban". I thought he sounded like a dick, even though I agree with most of the things he has to say. The correct way of saying this is "by accident" but commonly it is said as "on accident" as a parallel to "on purpose." This is the most succinct explanation I found: Quote The phrase "on purpose" communicates intent and connection through the use of the pronoun "on." Things that happen accidently are not controlled, therefore the correct usage of the idiom is "by accident" and the use of the preposition "by" indicates an outside means of action or agent of action as opposed to the choice (indicated by "on") so using "by" shows that something happened unintentionally - "by accident." That being said, the phrase "on accident" is being used more and more colloquially among young people and will most likely eventually become the norm. Hooray! I must say that I have never heard anyone say 'on accident' before. I do now think that it will piss me off if anyone ever does say it to me. Guest Ramses
"Literally" is getting incredibly out of hand in the US. Some of the recent abuse I've witnessed: "I literally died in the gym yesterday." (during a game) "Dude you are literally raping me." (in an English teacher's research paper briefing) "there are so many analytic thoughts about Shakespeare that you can literally wade through them." Another common one: "I'm not gonna lie." So you are just now being truthful towards me?! "Retarded" - a great way to sound low class. A phrase with that is subtly spiteful and venomous: "I'm sorry you feel that way." What a meaningless apology! Slapdash philosophies are also annoying. Please note that I do not intend to attack the beliefs, just their vague simplicity, thoughtless usage, and matter-of-fact declaration. "Everything happens for a reason." That's an assertion equally bold and ambiguous. "It's all a part of God's plan." What if it's a consequence of an individual's decision? Again, I don't intend to attack beliefs, rather stating something as fact without consideration for logical alternatives. Just a few of my observations.
