Grip everything you can by Jon Hassell.

His best "solo" work sounds like jazz on about 25mg of valium (in a good way),,,, calming, soothing sounds, very different to Coltrane et al & far less frenetic. He puts his trumpet (ooh er matron) through all manner of sound effects/filters/younameit and that in itself is a lesson in the variety of sounds you could extract from just a single instrument.

Loads of collaborations that have aged really well too - the Psychgeography (sp?) remixes are fun but the lp he did with Eno is classic gear

I love Miles Okazaki so much

highly conceptual stuff (like much of the M Base stuff)

he's a visual artist, as well:

he just put out a book

a sort-of systematic presentation of his ideas

i'm gonna try to pick it up this weekend

but here's his website (lotta great conceptual stuff about form and rhythm and counterpoint):

p.s.

Dan Weiss, the drummer in MO's group, is probably the most mathematically elegant drummer I've ever heard

here are the other tunes MO made animated scores for:

Why has no one mentioned Wes Montgommery yet?... seriously get some Wes in your collection if you don't have any

Really love listening to Wes, especially Smoking at the Half Note. I also quite like Grant Green, especially some of the sessions he played on with Lee Morgan. Are there any good modern Jazz albums that feature electric guitars that are of this vein?

We probably mentioned him in an earlier 'jazz - the thread'. For a guitarist like me, he's 101 listening list along with charlie christian (in the same vein) and due to that early exposure i'm sure his melodic and rhythmic identity has embedded somewhere deep in my bones by nao. Still though, for that buzz nowadays i listen to mid to late 60's george benson, back when he was still fast tempo going for it. I prefer those runs at an higher tempo, plus i could probably skat every wes solo of note as it was playing.

A member of the non sequitairiate.
