Yeah, I have some George Benson. I really like White Rabbit, but don't have anything else by him.

I keep meaning to pick up some Charlie Christian and Tal Farrow too.

this is great stuff

WTF I was roommates with this guy in college. Small world. He was an incredible guitarist then too, not surprisingly.

Yeah totally

I had sorta lost faith in jazz for a while

As being un-progressive, self-indulgent and sometimes even puritanical

And instead I was drawn towards more conceptual-minded composers

In other fields

But folks like Mark Turner, Miles Okazaki, Dan Weiss

Reaffirmed

That jazz doesn't have to be

Dudes running scales

Over generic swing

(Which to me is about the least interesting thing)

Miles Okazaki especially

Hits my Steve Reich g-spot

I gotta go out and buy his book

Yeah haha. I didn't know him for very long - just a couple of years really. But yeah we worked together in the dining hall and whatnot. We even took a jazz survey course together which was a joke for him, but opened my eyes quite a bit and is why I know anything about jazz really. Cool that he has a fanbase on here.

cheesy yair, but it seems like they're having fun, must be nice having an on point withit band, and there's some moments of sickness.

Holy hell! I can't believe a video about tuning a guitar could be so fascinating! Thanks, that was unexpectedly cool!

I know!

After tuning my guitars

I was always confused why the G string was always outta tune

Never once had I heard someone mention just temperament when talking about tuning

Never ever ever

Another bit of proof that

the people who taught me about the world

were full of shit and didn't know how to say "I don't know the answer to that"

in another video george b was tlaking about soloing and saying that really as complicated as jazz can be broken down he finds that as long as you know the key you can just bust the chords out and play to your ear what sounds right and it'll be ok, well this is a late night dleetr version of what he said but it was rather comforting for an half arsed bitch such as myself to hear, nao if only i could have learnt to play through those changes, heh ..

RIP Ornette.

Not to suddenly change tack, but I'm always wanting to find out if anyone likes these guys as much as I do (whenever a Jazz thread pops up).

Yeah, he's good stuff.

(Also, he gives private lessons, but that probably doesn't make sense unless you've shed his book for a year or so...)

  • 3 weeks later...

mary halvorson's album saturn sings is great. if you've heard trevor dunn's trio convulsant, she's the guitarist from that. her albums have different sounds, but this one reminds me of her work with the trio convulsant, which i like a lot, its some of my favorite guitar playing. some great use of brass on it, too
