I suppose you want to keep your heart rate in the fat-burning zone?(or however it´s called...) You can do that without a heart rate monitor, by just breathing through your nose or running at a speed that allows you to talk to someone.

  • 2 months later...

Decided to pick up my running at the gym now. 10k each morning. Only problem is my face is still like a Ribena-berry when I get to work.

Been cycling 20 miles every week day for the last three weeks. 10 miles in the morning, 10 in the evening. Varied terrain but more uphill on the way home. Started off really difficult, especially when getting towards the weekend, but the second week was noticably much easier and feel stronger by the day.

I'd like to do a bit of weight stuff as well, but I've got my diet in good order, got a good calorie deficit and am eating a lot of protein, not much sat fat and drinking lots of water, so hopefully I can shed the last bit of this blubber before long. Never been in better shape but feel like there's still a way to go! Feeling good!

I'm doing an hour of elliptical. Its insane, when i get to the 40 minute mark i feel like superman and i could keep going for two hours.

I don't really focus on my heartbeat, i read (from multiple sources) that the best thing to do is just to do the workout and as long as its below 170 bpm its fine (mine is between 140-160 bpm). I'm definitely seeing the benefits from cardio workouts, my resting heartbeat is in the low 70's, it used to be in the high 80's.

is 30 minutes a good time for a 5k? it was my first time.

i tried weightlifting again but fuck it, it just doesn't seem to be working...im eating too much, im eating too little, im not eating clean enough, fuck it. running gets me high. it gets me HIGH

Yeah that's a solid time mate. If you're running and working hard throughout then it's a good effort. Remember it's not really the distance that counts, it's how fast you're going. Shorter and harder is better than slower and longer. I do a 5k parkrun each saturday morning. Currently doing 22min.

Well each morning I go to the gym, either 4 or 5 times a week. I got used to doing it in the morning so it doesn't take time out of what I have after work. I dunno how long I'll keep it up but hopefully at least a few weeks.

So my wrist is getting close to totally healed. I've been able to do push ups and pullups and free weights. Still building back up to pre-break levels, but god damn it feels good to exercise daily again.

yes, but it now means that you are more likely to be a sociopath. (no offense dude, i'm not saying that you are. just tied into something i was reading the other day).

Really? That's crazy. I used to have sociopathic tendencies in middle school, but I grew out of it. I'm 99% sure it's because I've worked hard to be in this kind of cardiovascular shape, though.

Also, for those curious, here's a resting heart rate chart:

i have a reasonably low resting heart rate as well. We'll chalk this one up to correlation but not causation, eh. Cause after all, who would think that atheletes were prone to sociopathic tendencies. heh ...

  • 4 weeks later...

so since starting my new job, I have gotten very little cardio, and I can feel it. So, I've decided to start running. I am going to make it part of my morning routine.

Today was day 1. I felt like death after. This is going to be a long, slow process of getting used to this.

Any runners here? Any advice for an absolute beginner?

I live in San Francisco, so it's all hills.... no flat areas around me, which I feel like is going to make it a little harder to start off as well.

Cool, thanks!

I found a similar program online that I am going to follow. Sadly I only got through 12-13 minutes before I had to call it quits. It was definitely a shock to my system. Hopefully next time I can make it the full 20 minutes.

It was also fairly hotter than average today, but I dont want to make up excuses... :-\

not a good option.. I really dont have the time. The appeal is that I can get up 30-40 mins earlier, run, and go to work. Swimming is entirely impractical with my lifestyle right now :(

I will be careful with my body though.. Im not going to push it, and if I feel that Im hurting myself, Ill find something else.

then run on grass as much as possible and get yourself a good pair of running shoes.

kcinsu: a rule of thumb for me is to start very slow/fat burning heart rate, and every subsequent workout try to put forth about 10% more effort, however you want to calculate that (distance, heart rate for x amount of time, whatever)

id also say hang in there...it takes a good while for your body to get used to it, but once it does you'll crave a run like you'd never thought you would.

and also make sure to have rest days to give your knees/legs time to heal up.

best of luck!!!

is there any real evidence that running is damaging to the knees and ankles? if you have a problem with your knees while running you will know it. any real injury will prevent you from running.
