why do hipsters think its cool to use shit equiptment?

Recommended Posts

I watched a hipster band my mate was engineering for this weekend and the shitty portable amp they used started to make a horrid noise just because it was shit plane and simple. Why not just spend a few quid if your doing gigs?

my mate then winged about all the shit little xylophones, small 80's casio keyboards and other toy like junk in suit cases that stripey hipsters seemed to find cool for some reason?

I'm also branding the OP1, onmichord, circuit bent toys, Microkorg and Monotron in this brackett too.

Tell me why babylon?

You could say hipsters or you could say kids that don't know what they're doing.

I mean is it really more complicated than that? If they were read up on gear they wouldn't sound so bad. They're just trying to be neato like their friends.

I could say that not knowing what they are doing is a trait of being a hipster.

why do you want to use expensive equipment if you can't even play chords?

onmichord...Monotron

Ah come on, the Omnichord sounds sorta cool, right? Right? And the Monotron is just the most prominent source of cheap analogue blippy bloops at the moment, which if you listen to half of the posters in the Featured Artist Subforums are the pinnacle of musical all artistic development over the last few millenia. But really they are kind of nice to have some times.

Other than that, though, I do agree with you. There does seem to be this idea that shitty gear = more pure & honest somehow, but unlike other hipster obsessions like tape wobble & animal noise recordings, this sort of shitty gear rarely improves a piece of music.

there is a silly obsession with hardware at the moment - it just sounds better apparently. doesn't matter what hardware - it all sounds better in hipster world.

can't make promocore crunkstep on a monotron, bro

Personally I don't get why anyone would waste money on a Monotron. To my ears it sounds like a piece of useless dung and is doesn't even have midi.

i agree. it's a piece of shite. and so is the new one!

get rid of the silly ribbon and pen thing, give it midi and some proper keys, make it a bit sturdier and less cheap lookng and you might just have something

we're not talking about computers.

well until you address the original question the thread posed - the one about knick-knack gear, not computers - my point still stands.

why would you need play chords when you can just press pads on expensive equipment and get the same results? Its much easier

Im not so sure its because they think its cool to use shitty things. I say its more a lack of knowledge.

There is a guy I know here in Indy that has all the "hipster" tools. Kaos pad/osc, monotron, circuit bent shit, microkorg, blah blah blah, all of em. He has a hardware obsession I think. Funny that everything he has is digital tho(minus the piece of shit monotron). Ive tried explaining to him that he has a lot of little dedicated computers but he just cant see it. He just reads the front page of Synthtopia.com and wants whatever looks cool. With all the money he has spent on fucking toys he could have a few really nice pieces that could really help him sound stronger. But, he knows more than me and knows the computer just makes beats for you. But we wont talk about the fact that I(just somebody that uses a pc and doesnt understand what it takes to use hardware) had to set up his whole rig, midi synced all his equipment for him so he can play shows with synced shit. I mean fuck!! he wouldnt let me hook up my trigger finger to his rig cus "those are for computers" even tho i told him MIDI is not just a computer thing.

As you can see, just making decisions based on what you have heard, and not what you have done, really gets under my skin.

how are these 'knick-knack' hipster things and gimmicky Korg toy instruments expensive equipment?

just sayin........
