You can buy an excellent ms-20 filter clone with a cool-ass LFO (and a VCO thrown in there for good measure) for £50 and you call it a piece of shit. Yet you make music on sterile romplers. I watched a nerdy techno band my mate was engineering for this weekend and the expensive tube amps they used started to make a horrid noise just because their music was shit plane and simple. Why spend a few quid if your just doing gigs?

 

my mate then winged about all the stupid patch bays,effects equipment and other overly expensive synths in custom cases that techno nerds seemed to find cool for some reason?

That, and a smaller noise floor. I sold the thing, I initially bought it for the filter input, but nothx.

Now this is a prime example of fooling a hipster audience that this is the kind of music they should be into when about 95% of the music is actually comming from the macbook.

i've seen plenty of interesting music come from questionable gear, but this is the exception. i've seen way more shit music come from shit gear.

Well I call it a piece of shit because you can't do anything on it except for silly little zap effects. Its a waste synth. Plus the Romplers I have have infinitely more power than that. But yeah I agree different strokes for different folks and all that.

I do think there is some value in "doing it" versus "doing it right". What I mean by this is that if what you have at your disposal is shit equipment and you still allow your creative perspective to flourish despite having limited means(origins of hip-hop, folk music, etc) that's wonderful...unfortunately for the group that we are criticizing, the hipsters, it seems that they are less interested in creativity than approval based on contemporary fads and trends. That's what gets me by the short and curlies--when people are expressing themselves only to be seen and not because they actually have something to say. It's the musical equivalent of a sycophant, yet they are hiding behind irony; they want approval but criticize it when it comes. Buying shit equipment is just an extension of that insecurity--they want approval but don't want to appear like they are trying too hard, when in fact buying the shit equipment in the first place is the ultimate expression of trying too hard.

 

In my opinion, it's a form of identity insecurity. Two year olds say no just to assert their existence. It's a normal developmental phenomenon. What we have here, though, with hipsters is a transparent failure to launch.
