why do hipsters think its cool to use shit equiptment?

maybe those 'hipster' dudes just don't know much about synths and find the whole hardware thing cool so they put their hands on what they could, pretty randomly. one person i used to be in love with developed a passion for electronic music and fell into the hardware illusion hole, which makes me sad a bit because i think she's wasting her time.

why spending money on expensive gear when you can download FL studio illegally and make nice little tracks with it?

So they use shit equipment (by your standards) and their style of dress (or relative lack thereof) irritates you. Really, what is it hurting you that a few hipsters enjoy using crap equipment (to you), whatever the reason? If it lets them make the music they want to make, who gives a fuck? Don't listen to it. Don't support them at gigs. Problem solved.

Luke, from what i gathered, wasn't talking about spark/ear/drive (talent/passion) tho.

he was talking about knowing how to play an instrument in a traditional way. that in itself is naive and irrelevant today in modern music.

maybe you guys didn't/don't have a lot of money for decent gear. i don't know, and don't see what the problem is with people who might have some money wanting to buy some good musical equipment. doesn't matter who you are. if you have the money and want to buy something decent, do it!

learn it, or don't learn it. play it, sample one fingered stabs/chords of it, sell it on... do what you want.

LOL, the monotron is not a synthesizer. it does not synthesize anything. it makes bleepy analog noises (for people, possibly hipsters, who want that immiation, fun, sound but don't have enough money for the real thing) and it can be used as a filter. that's all.

because they're fucking posers.

the key word is 'want'. hipsters don't 'want' to do anything other than look cool and seem hip, trendy, edgey, quirky, etc.

hence, the reason they use 'shit' equipment. it's all about the image and seeming 'lo-fi', quirky, weird, whatever. "oh look! he's up onstage making music with all these tiny weird little objects! he's such an individual!"

the hipster hate is because it's all so calculated. the instruments are chosen because of their look, not their functionality (fixie bike) and any music they make is incidental, a waste product of their main intention which is getting up on a stage in front of a bunch of people and posing and looking cool. as a music fan, it kind of ticks me off to see an art form crapped on like that. fuck a hipster.

also just want to state that alot of the gear mentioned in this thread i definitely think has it's uses in the right hands and i have no problem with whatsoever. i just don't like people choosing to use them because they look cool or that it's 'trendy'.

so you don't 'want' to make music? it's a need? a truly artistic need that perhaps makes you feel like a unique individual?
