So I just did the absurd thing of playing the vinyl version of Kommunion synched up with the CD version. For about 6 minutes they are exactly the same, then there's a slight shift. Interesting listen, which revealed some things.

Really? The two versions I have, when compared side by side, are different at the beginning. There are obvious vocal intonations at the start of the vinyl version that are missing from the CD version. As far as I can tell, the second part of the track is pretty much the same in both versions. Interesting.

EAC reports ~3 minutes of pregap music on CD 1 of this, but my player is not IDM enough to rewind and play it. Anyone have an EP7-approved CD player that could enlighten us as to what is in there?

Really? Interesting - will check this evening to see if I can find out.

I couldn't actually rip this using EAC or DbPowerAmp with my laptop because the BD-ROM drive wasn't able to properly read it, but eventually ripped it on another PC that did. Sort of an interlude-y kind of track again. Nothing special, like most of the extra tracks on the 2CD edition. Sort of get in the way of those that were released on the vinyl EPs. Shame really.

Does anyone else who owns the CD edition hear unnatural vinyl pops in 'All This Is Ours (Sunrise)', for instance at 1:05 and 3:02? Obviously there is a very textured sound in most of these songs, but these seem noticeably artificial...

Yes, I do. At one point I actually thought there might be a problem with my CD and that it was skipping. Then I thought it might have been a mastering error. Whatever it is, it sounds terrible! Not that I mind all that much as I honestly think that track is an utter waste of time anyway. ;-)

Huh, weird. I have those two pops as well. And yeah, they sort of sound like vinyl. Not like digital skips, that's for sure. Wonder what the deal is, if it's supposed to be all Burial-y and super postmodern or what.

Well, I think they, like, sample records in their music? I might be wrong here.

Ah sarcasm, yes, that's what was needed here. The point people are trying to make is that it really, really stands out in a bad way. Listening to it again it does sound like vinyl glitches with one particularly glaring one. Strange that they didn't try to smooth it out, at least a little. It's jarring.

Yeah, I'm sure these pops were unintended, but I'd be interested to hear a clean vinyl version at these parts to confirm. On one level I'm glad it's not just my copy, but on another, this song unfortunately seems to have been very poorly mastered. And it's a bit of a shame because I quite like it

For some reason I can't seem to stop myself from being overly harsh about the bonus tracks on the CD edition, of which this is one. I think it's because the material that appeared on the four vinyl EPs is so strong, and each track has such identity that these just seem like rather disappointing sketches in comparison. Apart, perhaps, from "Metamorphosis" (which I love) and "New Use For Old Circuits".

The hidden pregap track sounds like it should be on one of those Daphne Oram compilations. :)

Ah, hadn't realised it was one of the bonus tracks. Would have loved to get the LPs but just couldn't/can't afford them!

Haven't been able to access the hidden track, either, due to lack of non-PC CD player at the moment :cerious:

I did however pick up the comp they did for Finders Keepers Records. They're offering it for £5 shipped: http://www.finderskeepersrecords.com/shop_176.html. Not a bad little selection of odds and ends, exactly the kind of thing you'd expect them to be digging up...

I'm assuming it's added on purpose. I'm not a fan of this sort of thing, but I get it. Same with the Burial EP "dropouts" really.

It's there in the preview of the digital download version of the track on the Boomkat preview player, as well. So not a CD-related issue.

Well, my sarcasm wasn't intended to be pissy, more of a lighthearted encouragement of perspective. I don't have the CD version yet, but even on the vinyl version there are all kinds of distortions that I assume are fully intentional due to their inclusion on the Golden Pudel Club CD-- vinyl crackle, pops, 60 cycle hum as if the turntable was ungrounded, etc.

My apologies then. :)

Yeah, the vinyl versions have a lot of this going on too, no doubt due to the eclectic nature of the records they sample from their vast collection. :)

Perhaps in this case it was simply unavoidable. I wouldn't have thought they really, really want that level of popping in what is essentially and ambient (and then up to noisy) track. Actually, having listened to this again it's growing on me.

The 2CD version is very nice (usual high quality packaging etc) but don't expect too much from the "alternate" versions.

yes! just found out one of my favorite local band Water Boarders (also the best band on Triangle records by a factor of 10billion) is opening for Demdike stare when they play out here!

What!? When!? Where!?

They're really wonderful live—I mean, their live show isn't stylistically different from their recorded music, so it's not exactly dancefloor edits of their music. Still very brooding and slow, but the fact that they put a lot of work into the visual aspect makes for an overall wonderful live set. I posted video footage that I shot of them in the youtube videos thread.
