Jesus this thread is fucking ridiculous. There are large amounts of "white people" that grow up in areas where they and "white culture" are not the norm. So, it stands to reason that a good percentage of these people would embrace the music & culture they've grown up in,whatever that may be. Hell, even if they didn't grow up in a culture they have a right to embrace it and the gauge for their sincerity is if they're ostracised or not by the people who live it. Are there are artists that vapidly fetishize a culture that they don't have a connection to? Yes but last I checked that was called pop music, in every genre. Incredibly broad strokes being painted in this thread...

This thread is complete bullshit. And these attitudes are prevelant from America, nowhere else. In the UK we don't have these attitiudes. Jungle, Drum and Bass, Dubstep (now fucked because the yanks got hold of it) and underground music is played and created by black and white youths. Together.

Awepittance - I think you might just have to get over your bias (and I'm guilty of it too) - like Takeshi said - there's bound to be people who adopt the culture and all that goes along with it. Eminem grew up in the trailer park (white ghetto) and hung out with people who liked rap. He found out he has some talent at it and exploited that to get ahead in life. Along the way he adopted the cultural mannerism of his society.

It is ridiculous though - I mean - do we accuse Basquiat of selling out cause he started hanging out with Andy Warhol and shooting heroin?

However, there's more than a handful of some good white rappers out there. Slug (Atmosphere, etc...), Eyedea, Aesop Rock, El-P, Brother Ali, Doseone, Wide Eyes, etc... even Eminem was once a skilled lyricst before he got over-commercialized by Dre.
