I have a feeling lots of the reasons you don't like most electronic music is secretly based upon "It's too popular" ideals.

That's such a low blow!

My friend once called me a hipster faggot for not liking Skrillex.

Its like someone who eats healthy feels the need to bitch about too many fast food restaurants opening in their town. There will always be a horde of people eating sloppy slaughter house surprise. In other words: "where there is focus there is activity" so take your focus away from the negative aspects of a music scene and you will be an improved version of yourself.

Come on, people...ET's complaint is that there's too much shitty electronic music out there now. Telling him to produce tracks is just going to increase that quantity.

Listen to many, many genres.

Throw in some Reggae, Hip Hop, Jazz, and Metal. Krautrock. All on heavy rotation. If nothing else you'll appreciate electronic music more because you'll hear what it is doing with the aforementioned influences. Awesomeness abound.

ET, I actually had a huge ephipany this year in regards to electronic music, mostly because my love of dubstep was tainted by the whole Skrillex/Brostep phenomenon. I went though the same thing Emo, Punk, and Grunge fans experienced - watched a beloved scene become "ruined" because a few shitty popular acts broke. I've seen idiots online attempt historical revisionism of what "dubstep" means. But I realized it didn't matter. And more importantly, I listened to more great new electronic music than ever before, partly because I know my own tastes better.

Anyway, despite actually becoming less cynical than ever before about music, I still understand the feelings you have. Personally I think much has to do with the apparent lull in new and novel sounds lately. It's not so much that innovative music isn't being made, but the fact that it seems past genres, IDM and dnb, etc came and went and their freshness went as well. Nothing quite replaced what they achieved. I have to agree with Simon Reynolds that retro-minded music is bigger than ever, and there's something alarming about the idea that music now won't have a zeitgeist...in other words we won't be able to look back on this or recent years with clear musical and pop culture associations because all of it is postmodern rehashing. That's just one take, but it's relevant to me because a lot of electronic music I've loved this last year had clear references to past styles and timbres. Likewise, I can understand, even though I despise it, why Skrillex or Datsik, Dz, Excision, Nero blah blah can get so much buzz and acclaim, albeit mostly from tweens and douches - it's because they've tweaked sounds that other artists developed over the past couple of decades and introduced them to people who've never seriously listened to electronic music. It's frustrating to think about, and I liberated myself from dwelling on it by realizing it was pointless and irrelevant to do so. I hope you can get out of your listening funk. It's nice to know others on WATMM and elsewhere feel the same way. Besides, all this crap music is being consumed by worthless people anyway. Ignorance is bliss, but knowledge is enlightening...it's just a lot more mentally exhaustive.

Well done Luke, you said what I was thinking.

I think it's good that you guys don't like 'modern music' that means its changed enough for a new generation. You guys are just getting older and getting set in your ways, which is normal.

i just don't see most new electronic music being innovative

i don't get the same rush from chris clark as i do when i drop cockver10 or hasty boom alert

clark is obviously a talented dude and i am only using him as a convenient example but yea like rixx said ,it's just time/aging and it's effect on perspective?

the virtuosity and musicality has somehow been lost

i find myself lovingly reverting to dub/reggae/old school hip hop/pop music from the 60s and 70s

pre war blues AND funk/soul/R&b from the early 60s to the late 70s to refresh my ears and heart

almost all of my favourite albums are post-2005

so i don't believe for a second that music is shitter now than it was decades ago.

edit: should have put "electronic" in both those sentences.

something must be wrong with me then, because i feel electronic music is really strong these days. maybe your 'old heroes' aren't as good anymore, but so what? the worst bit about this sort of community is that a lot of people are basically just clinging to the same 5-6 artists and hoping they do miracles again and again. if you can't get into any new music, then either you're not really opening up and listening or you've just got the narrowest taste possible. either awy, you're screwed. have fun!

meanwhile - the local maternity ward - nurse comes in with a great big sledgehammer

Looking subjectivley i think innovations in electronic music wont be comming directly from the more entertaining dance culture side of things as the niche underground that it was is now just a means to get the masses onto the latest genre and cash in imho.

I'll agree that progress has been slow of late but its still there. The age of the suoerstar dj is gone and there's certainly more scope to move electronic music out of the studio and bring it as a real performance art if you want to attract attention of the fanatic rather than the chin scratcher.

100% agree

I'm swarmed with music all the time, I'll never get away/it consumes me to the point where I'm pretty sure that even if I was around kicking about and buying records/making music in the golden era of Warp et al that I have far more music contending for my attention now.....

there is loads of amazing music coming out

you're just not aware of it ;) (in response to ET)

I can 100% promise you that there is nothing weak or rubbish about this decade or "modern electronic music" (the shite SURE, there is ALWAYS shite)

the magicians that work magic for the love of it though, plenty more of those kicking about now imo!

Loads of great music about, like there always has been. Maybe you just need to sink your teeth into summat else.

Electronic music most certainly isn't the be all and all. Maybe you ought to go see a hardcore/punk gig? Then you will see what I mean

For me electronic music is in really good health. Always so much to listen to. Endless...

i'm working on experimental religious gabber at the moment. not sure if this is your thing?

lol i am actually serious... it's not religious in that it's about god. but it's got a kind of church feel, lots of space and organ sounds counterbalanced with distorted kick drums and odd bleepy noises. i might do some chanting on it too.

I think this thread is step one i ET's subconscious advertising scheme for his castle in the sky record label.

Some songs I made with my fingers and electronics. In the process of making some more. Hopefully.

You could say fuck most music of all genres. Lets be honest only a small percentage of any style of music is really any good. And its our job to sift through all the silt and find those speckles of gold, and its a job I love doing, in fact thats part of the fun.

I always feel sorry for people that find most music shit, that must suck.
