Yeah man. I used a higher quality version of that picture and made this in a few minutes just to see how similar it looked.

Pretty close if you ask me. If you were to wear leather like that, stain an Aphex symbol on it, and then take a macro shot of it, I reckon it'd look pretty much exactly like the cover art.

is the vinyl artwork much betten than this CD scan?

anyone willing to scan in hires so I can have a decent wallpaper?

I always wondered if the logo was photoshopped in or if they did really build it

I always assumed it was Photoshopped (effects like this were a bit harder to pull off in 1994 (ah, channels and masks), but certainly do-able), but they could have stenciled the logo onto a concrete wall or stone surface.

The vinyl artwork doesn't have the terrible large dot pattern like the CD printings do...

yeah why photoshop it when you can do it real. I never thought it was real but if you take a look at the details it would have been much easier to just do it instead of a photoshop

It looks more like leather. Very thick and very worn leather. The aphex symbol looks scratched etched in, but not all the way, but digitally retouched to make the symbol complete.

In all the decades I've looked at that album cover, I never noticed the leather pattern until now - amazing. I bet it was an old piece of leather he tried to emboss the logo on, the experiment failed, and ended up burnishing the pattern in, and liking the results.

I wonder if sending an email to the designer who helped him design the Aphex Twin logo and SAW II's visual design would recall what the cover was made from...

If you get an answer, you should ask if they have the original high-res file. Mmmm. I'd buy that file.

my copy of the cd is the first i've mine that i've spotted to contain disc rot.

random dots from centre outwards about halfway and edges of the silver part of the disc also going.

had it since day one.

Someone in this thread mentioned that Stone in Focus won't be on there.. do you know this for sure?

I will definitely buy the record if it includes Stone in Focus..

It would be a departure from the original vinyl, as that's the only place to get #19 (besides appearing on the Excursions into Ambience series), and even then, that's on CD.

Considering they are supposedly working from the CD version (and we don't know which CD version - hope it's not the US one that omits CD1 #3), this is probably the case.

I am still very curios about the quality of this release (cover artwork / pressing) as I am ok with not spending $300 on the original with either bad sound-quality or black and white cover art. (no offense to those who did)

Actually, if I'm not mistaken, the cassette version of SAWII includes Stone in Focus as well.

Speaking of which, is there anyone out there who owns it on cassette who'd be willing to part with it? I'd definitely buy that.

while they quality is pretty abominable, you can get it for under $100 easily

Hopefully they used the original printing plates or photographic negatives... if they scanned the actual vinyl sleeves (or God forbid they scanned the CD inserts), then it will be pretty easy to tell depending on how much time they spent cleaning up the scan. Either way I'm not hopeful.

both versions of the SAW reissues are bootlegs.

warp via fb:

"Warp Records SAW II = definitely fake/bootlegs... not licensed or released by Warp. The 85-92 release is on R&S, but from the artwork it appears to be a bootleg also."

Thanks for clearing that up, Andy - good to know. In fact, I'm going to change the topic title so nobody gets duped into buying these...

still the quality remains unknown. At least we can be sure the will not use the master files / artwork that has been used to create the originals

I got an email back from the shopholder that included the related liscensing information. It appears this is a repress licensed by Sire records.

Even missing a track, I have to say Rhino pressings are really very very good. Look forward to it regardless.
