Are we considering Peel Sessions unreleased/rare? I just heard this full compilation of the various sessions for the first time...

http://youtu.be/CQvlLa94nVI

I'd heard some of it before, of course, but fuck me. This whole mix is gorgeous. Those unreleased tracks and Radiator versions are amazing. Can't believe I've yet to take in this "release" and let it simmer until now. What an amazing fusion of re-interpretations of SAWII/Surfing on Sine Waves/Classics material with some random miscellaneous stuff thrown in in a continuous format.

So what's the deal with this material? Was it played live on a radio show? Or did rdj just play the records and then add some layers of his own? Does a video exist anywhere? (For the record, I've seen the Sound of Cornwall, but it doesnt show RDJ in his studio). Sorry, ya'll im kind of ignorant to the whole John Peel thing.

Some tracks are unreleased, not really rare because it has been floating around the internet for years. As far as Peel Sessions go (someone correct me if I'm wrong) but I think John Peel never got rights to let artists play at the BBC live, so they would record a 'session' somewhere else and later play it on the BBC. Aphex probably just sent a DAT with some tracks to John Peel, no live session or anything.

Also, the 'unknown session' in this video doesn't exist to my knowledge. Cunt is just a track from AB3.1, Blue Calx is just the album version, Italic Eyeball and Quixote are the same recordings as from 1992 but in a different quality. We Have Arrived is also just the album version.

I know that Joyrex has a recording of both Peel Sessions with the peel session version of We Have Arrived on it, that's really the only track still missing and has just being replaced with the album version (although it's probably just the same version in lesser quality, like the rest). I asked him years ago on here if he could upload it but no results... yet :emotawesomepm9:

Hmmm interesting, thanks for the insight.. So really, even the genuine Peel Sessions from 92 and 95 are only significant for the untitled tracks - (which I assume have never been available to hear anywhere else, yeah?), the Radiator (fast and mixed versions), and the fact that the compilation/order/flow was assembled by rdj himself.. We're assuming here that they were DATs of those mixes sent to John Peel who then broadcasted them.. and what, someone recorded them off the BBC broadcast, converted to mp3, and uploaded to kazaa or whatever back in the day? so there's probably some FM compression, artifacts, etc going on, in addition to the probably low bitrate mp3 transfer- at that time- which gives it sort of a non-sterile vibe like it's a live mix or something. i love it, it's like some kind SAWII/Surfing on Sine Waves/Castic Window lo fi outtakes/alternate versions mix :D

Yeah, that's pretty much spot on. The radiator mix is significant because it was only when 26 mixes for cash was released that it got a proper release. Also, the third track of the 1995 session was a leftover from I Care Because You Do.

Besides the We Have Arrived track (and the fake "unknown sessions" from that video), it's all recorded from the radio I guess, and the lo-fi sound of the rips appeal to me too, which is why I wanted Joyrex to rip the whole session including We Have Arrived. I'm also curious as to what source Joyrex has for his version as there was never another source on internet with the complete rip.

I can remember that one of Aphex' sessions was broadcasted on the BBC a year ago or so, but I don't think that was picked up or recorded?

That was titled '[pHonic5]' in an old set of mp3s that I think phonicboyondope uploaded ages ago.

It's a nice tune. I wish I could edit the first post again without it fucking up the formatting.

Maybe it's time to move the list to a wiki page...

Yeah, some kind of definitive list would be nice. I'm probably missing a few then, as this one was new to me. Cheers!

I lose track, is this one known? Ignore it if it is.

A forum member hooked me up with this, and it is labeled "unreleased ATP". My favorite of the unreleased tracks I think. A proper recording of this would really be a blessing.

My source was a CDr that someone (can't recall who) sent to me ages ago - it sounded like they recorded it from cassette (probably recorded it from the radio onto cassette, as was the de rigeur in those days), and then encoded the cassette into a digital file, then into redbook audio for the CDr. I never share anything online, so that's probably why this version I have never made it into wide distribution (as well other things) - assuming of course whomever provided me with it had the same philosophy.

Back in the joyrex.com days, I would get loads of CDrs from people (or MiniDiscs) "in the know" - that's how a lot of the rare stuff I have I came across - other things came from the artists themselves, or people with the labels.

I recall one of the Peels that ends with Pancake Lizard has Peel talking over the end of it, or some sample related to football in it - been ages since I listened to it, and I don't even have it in my iTunes library at the moment. I still have a lot of archived stuff I've only listened to once and then put in in an infamous bin to sort though to put on the site, sadly.
