It was an arguable decision. The IOC also requires cash payment when these are made on the floor, which looks sketchy as fuck even though it's the formal procedure:

^to clarify, I think the Japanese appeal was less warranted - they basically allowed a bad dismount count, whereas the judges forgot to add a point to the American girl's routine.

Also, hopefully this nonsense was just on American news coverage, but super-hyped track and field competitor Lolo Jones cried about getting 4th in hurdles this morning in an interview on the NBC Today Show. It wasn't about losing actually, she was complaining about criticism she's received and how people are not crediting her enough. She said NYT should of been more supportive partly because they're both American!

 

Before the games she signed major ad endorsements, had an appearance on Jay Leno, multiple high-profile interviews, and adorned the front cover of Time Magazine. She's gone into details about her Christian faith, virginity, being a Tim Tebow fan and in the same timeframe posed partially nude on two magazine covers. Her reaction to being criticised was very passive aggressive and conceited - anything positive she said was quite self-centered (I hope I inspire people...) Funny enough, I caught an interview with the medalists for the same event, and they were quite friendly, humble, and upbeat. I'm certain they trained just as hard as well without seeking out or embracing the attention Lolo Jones recieved. I dunno, maybe it's quite fitting they won the medals after all.

Personally, if I had been rated as 4th best in a certain event out of EVERYONE IN THE WORLD, I'd be pretty ecstatic.

Agreed, and even at my least cynical and most sympathetic, I understand her being upset when it's that close, but c'mon, you're one of thousands who trained just as hard JUST TO COMPETE! No need to blame it on anything else either. 3 people were better than you, at least you know you're better at hurdles the remaining female members of humanity.

 

And yeah, the two Americans were quite cheeky instead of humble (like you said, they are competitive American athletes) but it seemed like an honest reaction in comparison to the lolo emo nonsense.

I'm an American, and I watch other people compete besides Americans. Mindblowing, I know. It's almost like I enjoy watching top athletes excel in their sport as a celebration of human determinism and condition, rather than jingoistic masturbation. Crazy, innit

 

I've enjoyed the olympics, but then I'm a sports fan, so often it is easy for me to ignore everything that goes on around it.

It's great to be able to watch sports that I don't often watch. I've become jaded with a lot of the big, main sports, football in particular. So it's great to get that same feeling as you did when you were a kid, discovering a new sport, seeing athletes do things you've never seen before through their athleticism and/or skill.

Even learning new rules, and the subtleties of tactics and strategies is interesting to me.

 

Call me crazy, but I also like the fact that people from all over the world can get together for one event and just enjoy participating together. Maybe I'm being naive and everyone has ulterior motives, but I'm sure there are plenty of viewers like me who like watching people from different races, cultures and backgrounds and think about the different parts of the world they're from, what they must have done to get there, how their people would be reacting at home.

I see at as a showcase of the human race. Maybe in a very superficial way, maybe there are much better ways of showcasing, but it's the only thing we have at the moment.

i totally get it. cause one girl before fucked up even more but yet still got a higher score. something was obviously wrong. i just thought it was so fucking hilarious that Bela just stood up and started yelling at the coach cause he wasn't gonna request inquiry. that another coach has to yell at him to do it.
