throw of the dice - written by shuhei fujisawa

a couple of adaptations of fujisawa's books have appeared online; if you've seen yoji yamada's 'samurai trilogy' of 'the twilight samurai', 'love and honour' and 'the hidden blade' or 'sword of desperation' in the years since then, these are worth a look. the first is 'throw the dice', which i can't confirm if it's part of a series, but it's only an hour long. it's far better than the other that has appeared, the 2010 adaptation of 'a duel tale' which has tatsuya nakadai in the lead as a samurai who can't work due to a leg injury from his youth - and i honestly can't tell if nakadai manages to remember which leg he is supposed to be limping on - which is a great story, but not as nicely produced or acted. 'throw the dice' is about a man who returns to edo years after an incident in his role as a dice thrower for gambling houses. he attempts to redeem himself, whilst encountering characters who remind him of his past and former self.
