Watching "Solomon Kane".  Kinda fun.  A little campy, but pretty dark.  Reminds me of Constantine w/ Keanu with the style of demons depicted.

overrated ass filmmaker

i've seen mickey 17. never watched snowpiercer, suspect similar vibes. as though bong abandoned his style and tried to be terry gilliam. i've seen that mentioned, and suspect bong has said he like gilliam's work. reminds me that jackie chan was once pushed towards the idea of being the next bruce lee, and said he wanted to be the first jackie chan instead. having seen parasite, i was hugely baffled by the praise for it. i've watched a number of korean films since the oldboy explosion of interest, and found it among the very worst of what i've seen.

I enjoyed Parasite, just thought it was overrated by ppl getting on the K cinema hype train. Snowpiercer I thought was near-total bullshit, avoided Okja cos I was told that was even worse.

I guess I should try Memories of Murder.

I'll also add: I am not a fan of the wild and frequent tonal shifts, that is my biggest problem. stop trying so hard to be zany. I need a movie to set a mood and be consistent in its expression in order to really connect with me. that doesn't rule out mixing different things like humour and pathos and whatever else but not like that.

i felt this way about oldboy, which i remember being so big it even had the spike lee remix (don't remember this one being "a joint"). would be curious what you thought of that one, coz i genuinely thought parasite was brilliant (never seen bong's other films)

barking dogs never bite is his best film...

parasite is good@Nebraskagatekeepers only hate it cause of what usagi said...

not a fan of spike lee to say the least, but love PE, so fight the power.

i liked oldboy by park chan-wook, and rate his work until 'i'm a cyborg'. rewatching 'mr. vengeance' i started to find it felt dated and that was some years ago now. didn't like the recent things, but take the shift in style to be him admitting he needs to change up. getting old, i think. couldn't manage a whole film of his now.

i love bongs others films, especially 'memories of murder' which is a must see, up to 'mother' which is superb too. 'the host' i loved at the cinema, as it has a great balance between intimacy and large scale.

I have a generally mixed reception to all recent K cinema since the explosion of attention, and only a patchy familiarity with stuff prior to that. idgaf about gatekeeping any of it.

it was "quite good"

I mean I enjoyed it as I said, even re-watched it with my mum, but it's not something I'd think about much after unless it was brought up.

quite surprise and pleased there's significant knowledge of K film here; just in case they've been missed, and considering we've been hovering around bong joon-ho, i'd point to the two filmmakers i think are often forgotten or dismissed. primarily that's lee chang-dong - beware the recent USA BD set was a little bodged, replaced, but worth navigating around that issue - and na hong-jin, who usually gets remembered for 'the chaser' but deserved far more attention for 'the wailing' which i think is astonishingly sophisticated and should have hit so much harder with audiences than anything bong joon-ho has made. i'm waiting with crossed fingers that his upcoming 'hope' is great.

mermaid legend by toshiharu ikeda (1984)

environmental fable of sorts, a revenge drama that promises more than it delivers along the way, but which works as a whole. revolving around a corrupt construction company run by yakuza, a couple of murders of fishermen whilst in pursuit of nuclear reactor project and some lengthy nighttime revenge on the bad guys that's largely free from dialogue as a pay-off, this works mostly as escapism in it's small island and coastal setting with atmospheric underwater shots. feels somewhat influenced by the previous decades descent into more extreme and sexualised material in films from japan.
