Benjamin Middleton about the young Richard D. James

Guest Baldwin

Richard (AFX) James has been producing music since he was 12 - I have seen him.

He worked in his bedroom in a modern bungalow in Lanner, Cornwall.

His setup was bizarre to say the least. Casio FZ-10M, DX-100 (missing keys'n'all), SH-101, Quadraverb, Atari 520ST with bust keyboard(!), odd keyboards, bits of old electrical equipment, 8+ turntables, one borrowed mixer(!), bits of audio gear (all cleverly balanced on some lucozade cans, hand-sprayed JBL's suspended from ceiling by industrial strength chain. The list continues...

Digeridoo was recorded initially for the benefit of FIZZ-BOMB (at the Shire Horse, St Ives, Cornwall). He DJ'ed with my brother (Tom) both here and at the Bowgi Inn (Crantock, Newquay, Cornwall) - not to mention the numerous beaches around the county.

The original Pacman (never released) was recorded off an arcade machine in Newquay

The original is 100x better than the choci remix on yellow vinyl.

AFX released several of his original recordings on Rephlex Records, London - indeed, Richard himself resampled bits for R+S from these Rephlex Records (or that what it sounds like on the R+S release).

Richard now lives in Islington, London, and continues to do work for Rephlex Records (under the name Caustic Window)

.

His first record was a joint project with himself and my brother for Mighty Force Records (Exeter, Devon) - the Analogue Bubblebath EP (En Trance to Exit was Tom's idea!).

Tom continues to do work for Mighty Force (he had his Schizophrenia - My Splendid Idea released by them). Tom now works with Mark Pritchard (formerly SHAFT - Rhubarb + Custard) on Evolution Records (run by Tom and Mark).

This new label has gained alot of respect in London (indeed their latest release Global Communication - Sublime Creation has received a 5 * rating in Mix Mag. Just goes to show that good music

This just about sums up my connection with the twin. If you need further information, I will answer any mail.

i mean, that really is a bizarre setup. why remove the keys on the dx-100? why 8 turntables? maybe this wan't a studio and just a place they kept their gear. i say their cause i think rephlex shared their equipment

Gah, all this "jazz" bullshit - some of you need to remember there are new members here, and unlike us old farts that were around when this stuff was fresh and new, not everyone knows everything about Aphex Twin, or anything for that matter - Jazz(band) should only be applied to things that are clearly so common knowledge that bringing them up as new information warrants this, like the whole "Lives in a bank, drives a tank" crap.

An even more depressing thought - there are people here who were in diapers in 1994...

I suspect there's even people here that were not even a sparkle in their daddies eye yet in '94 - meanwhile I was trying my darnedest to get through that bloody Slow Barrel Blast level in Donkey Kong Country

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

I only say 'jazz' to note that it has already been shown or discussed in the forum. I don't really(care) hold it against the person for not knowing whatever it is they are presenting. I've been guilty of the same myself.

I was 7 years old and probably playing Super Bomber Man, Rocket Jockey, and Contra.

I should make it a rule that if you call Jazz, you MUST provide a link to the Jazzed material.

for me personally saying 'jazz' is a lot less annoying than being a new member and having people do the extremely unfunny done to death inside joke of 'read the rules'. Both are admittedly stupid as fucking hell, but just saying

it's baldwin's second post and people go mickey mouse club, i agree with joyrex and awepittance

as i am a relatively new member, i can confirm that "read the rules" can be annoying, but it is also educating. seriously, somebody who joins a forum and is offended by a raff the rulz should not be on the internets.

also, calling jazzband on something won't annoy new members as they have no idea what it means. when you look it up, it can be even funny ;)

The original pacman is so good that when you listen to it the essence of afx twins wafts out through the speakers & materializes into the man itself in the middle of the room. then he goes into the kitchen & eats all your corn & you get chased around the house by ghosts

Ben used to run reloadonline.com after Ian left, not sure how involved he is anymore since several mods were added a few years ago.
