Really cool post. I was thinking about this earlier and I read... this

http://web.clas.ufl....on/starwars.htm

compares Star Wars to the myth of Oedipus and some other stuff

Thanks man. That was a great read, even if it's weird that it is almost an attempt to equalize the hero's journey with oedipus. It surprised me about halfway in that all of the elements in the storytelling that's described is virtually identical with the proposed symbological ideals of most occult literature. Prior to this article, I had never encountered the term "treshold guardian" outside weird old branches of esoteric gnosticism.

"George Lucas has expressed his intention, in the event the deal closes, to donate the majority of the proceeds to his philanthropic endeavors."

why does this automatically make people think he's a good guy? What philanthropic endeavors/charities/organizations? The concept of a 'charity' is not necessarily automatically good, there are plenty of shit charities out there that take in a lot of money and don't do much to create positive change.

what an unpleasant and cynical point of view, the gives 4 fuckin billion dollars away and still thats not enough to impress you? jesus.

please explain to me why it should? Do we know where the 4 billion is going? I'm supposed to be impressed that a super rich man is donating 4 billion dollars to 'philanthropic' causes with absolutely no specifics?

Philanthropy

In 1991, The George Lucas Educational Foundation was founded as a nonprofit operating foundation to celebrate and encourage innovation in schools. The Foundation's content is available under the brand Edutopia, in an award-winning web site, social media and via documentary films. Lucas, through his foundation, was one of the leading proponents of the E-rate program in the universal service fund,[24] which was enacted as part of the Telecommunications Act of 1996. On June 24, 2008, Lucas testified before the United States House of Representatives subcommittee onTelecommunications and the Internet as the head of his Foundation to advocate for a free wireless broadband educational network.[25]

In 2005, Lucas gave US$1 million to help build the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial on the National Mall in Washington D.C. to commemorate American civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr.[26]

On September 19, 2006, USC announced that George Lucas had donated $175–180 million to his alma mater to expand the film school. It is the largest single donation to USC and the largest gift to a film school anywhere.[27] Previous donations led to the already existing George Lucas Instructional Building and Marcia Lucas Post-Production building.[28][29]

Lucas has pledged to give half of his fortune to charity as part of an effort called The Giving Pledge led by Bill Gates and Warren Buffett to persuade America's richest individuals to donate their financial wealth to charities.[30][31]

I'm not a fan of Lucas, but I guess I just find the assumption that he is a bad person kind of a stretch. He made some crappy prequel movies sure and used the franchise to make a lot of money, but it's not like he forced people to give him money. People like Star Wars, he came up with the idea and made it happen. Props to him, taking things beyond that seems pointless and irrelevant? Do you only support/enjoy stuff made by people who are angles? Burzum killed some people and burned a church down or something, but I've heard this one album and it's pretty good. Should I censor myself because of the character of someone I have never met or can influence?

We need to build new foundations, fostering independent thought and a desire to keep learning. Our students need to come away with more than just survival skills, and more than just what is required to complete the program. We need to promote critical thinking and emotional intelligence. We need to focus on building an education system that promotes different types of learning, different types of development, and different types of assessment. We have an opportunity and an obligation to prepare our children for the real world, for dealing with others in practical, project-based environments. It’s about working together and building character – being compassionate, empathetic, and civil as a means to a greater end.

As technology changes, so do students. So should classrooms, and so should our methods of teaching. In a few short years, connectivity has gone from a technological novelty to a daily necessity. It’s how our culture communicates, and our children are at the forefront of its use. Understanding those tools – and how to integrate them into learning – is an integral step in defining our future.

My pledge is to the process; as long as I have the resources at my disposal, I will seek to raise the bar for future generations of students of all ages.

I am dedicating the majority of my wealth to improving education. It is the key to the survival of the human race. We have to plan for our collective future – and the first step begins with the social, emotional, and intellectual tools we provide to our children. As humans, our greatest tool for survival is our ability to think and to adapt – as educators, storytellers, and communicators our responsibility is to continue to do so.

It'd be nice to know where exactly all this money is going, but I agree with his outlook on education, so his intentions seem more noble/good than bad.

Generally it sounds like his foundation is about bringing schools (K-12) up to speed with technology to provide students a more natural and exciting form of learning. Wider range of lectures, becoming computer literate, interactive virtual learning, etc.

I wouldn't say that it's never going to happen, because it would make a lot of money. Assuming Disney is not contractually obligated to limit distribution of Star Wars Blu-rays to the various "enhanced editions," it would be a pretty good business decision to re-release the original cuts. Especially in a pre- Episode VIII publicity wind-up.

i'd buy the shit out of a criterion original 3 star wars movies special edition, lovingly digitally restored but not raped.

After this I listened to geogaddi and I didn't like it, I was quite vomitting at some tracks, I realized they were too crazy for my ears, they took too much acid to play music I stupidly thought (cliché of psyché music) But I knew this album was a kind of big forest where I just wasn't able to go inside.

I rewatched the A New Hope last night... wow. What a weird experience watching it again.

First off, it's one of the greatest designed and looking/sounding films ever made. Absolutely no question! It almost is on the same level as a Fellini film in its designs and intricacy.

If you see it, there is something weird about it. It is open from the inside out. It's clearly more than just a movie. It definitely reminds me of the Wizard of Oz in that it's "old."

The film is well known to have been directly inspired by the mythological work of Joseph Cambell

Mythology of Star Wars with George Lucas & Bill Moyers

Disney does not own the rights over the old Star Wars movies. Sorry.

jimmy saville did a lot of charity work. Jus sayin.

Just to clarify, sometimes people do charity work for the wrong reasons. It may be guilt, personal gain or whatever. Im sure Lucas is all good though.

I wouldn't mind seeing Luke show up at least in Episode IX to pass on to the next generation as Lucas has said before, shit Hamill is crusty enough to be the old Jedi now.

Positive Metal Attitude

He looks like a nice jedi, I don't see why people think he looks too fucked up for film.

Some songs I made with my fingers and electronics. In the process of making some more. Hopefully.

Probably because he's not "Hollywood pretty".

Right. And if these people are too stupid to think back to the original Star Wars films... say, "Oh yeah, they didn't pick 'hollywood pretty' actors back then... so maybe we shouldn't try to do that now..." then frankly I think they should be deprived of food for 1-2 days. Seriously, how stupid do you have to be to not understand basic things like this? Some producer on the hunt for the big name actress... "uh, sir, Star Wars was the most successful film series ever and it didn't use big name actresses and a lot of the actors were weird looking..."

If that Whedon guy has anything to do with the project I'll probably fast for a week in order to maintain a feeling of control over my own sanity.

in all fairness tho the problems of the prequels were not casting - save for the sam jackson typical phone in. Portman was fine, as was christiansen. I thought actually thought ewan scotsman was a good choice, the script was just abhorrent.

agree tho, whedon sucks at this point in his career.

I guess folks forgot about Hamill's horrific car wreck between Star Wars 1 and 2. I believe that's what inspired them to do the whole wampa Hoth scene, to create a justification for his altered face; iirc he got quite a bit of plastic surgery to put things back together again. Who knows, he might have had more of a film career after SW if not for that.

i think it was even between 1 and the holiday special. I like to think of it as a dry run for his face makeup because it's so hilariously bad; just a pancake of foundation über alles

Its not released because you can see some things you are not supposed to see like props and so on that have been invisible before due to the low resolution. This is why it has been digitally altered to infinity until everything looked like Lukas intended it.

Him fucking it up by doing so is like photoshopping the Mona Lisa but that doesn't matter to Lukas.

lol. He looks awesome, the psychonaut Luke who's gone on a few too many vision quests. Spot on with the Yoda comparison, it's eerie.

Hamill's a good voice actor, too. I think he's underrated; he may not be a Harrison Ford but he's certainly better than Hayden Christiansen and Natalie Portman.
