I bought a turntable recently (it's my first one)...

It's a manual turntable... I guess my question is, towards the end of a vinyl, it will just keep playing right? If I don't like, grab the tonearm right at the end of the vinyl can it damage the needle in some way?

sorry I'm noob, never listened to music from an analog source...

you mean your kit didn't come with a helper-monkey? They usually deal with that shit.

Little known fact: Vinyl monkeys used to be very poorly trained; often becoming distracted by their own masturbatory activities, leading to frequent record damage. Angry audiophiles would sometimes punish these poor primates, eventually leading to the phrase 'spank the monkey' becoming a popular euphemism for compulsive self-stimulation.

hope this helps.

... It did come with a monkey but I thought that was just a complimentary meal to enjoy with my music.... ?

"But really.... do you know the answer to my question?"

I think unless your table has auto-return then yes, you'll have to pick it up at the end of the record. But most records have lock-grooves to prevent run-off don't they? So I'd just try it our and see what happens.

It has no auto return. I guess what I mean is, do I have to run across the room as soon as it's finished? If it runs off will it ruin my 100$ cartridge/stylus?

I didn't know about the locked grooves! thanks for your help.

Yeah I think most records have a closed groove at the end that the needle will run on indefinitely. You wouldn't want to leave it on there for too long though. No need for running though, i should think!

Thanks so much! I'm much less worried now =)

I googled this btw and didn't come up with much. Thanks for your help.

There are records without a lock groove, or a weak lock groove that the needle bounces out of, so you will on occasion find yourself running to your turntable. Also just as vinyl shouldn't be pluralized, it doesn't require an indefinite article either. It's vinyl. A record. Some LPs. Never a vinyl, nor vinyls. It makes you sound like a spastic with a lisp and a pretentious affectation. Vinyls enthusiast sounds like an autist who collects kitchen flooring samples.

How much wool would a chuckwood chuck if a chuckwood could chuck norris ?

Exactly sqrt(- 3i)

Question:

The company that sold me the turntable is trying to sell me a 129$ phono cable to go with it. The salesman is basically telling me that with an analog audio source you lose a considerable amount of sound quality with cheap cables and also when the cable is too long.

I know this is generally bullshit (see monster cables, gold plated cables, etc), but I don't know squat about analog sources, IE vinyl.

Is the guy yankin' my dick here or is he right?

That's what I figured! Thanks man.

I was just being cautious just in case there was some sort of crazy copper wire wizardry I didn't know about that was pertinent only to analog sources haha.

That would have been an interesting class though!

cheers

So, got the regular phono cables, got everything set up.

The Pro-Ject manual says the cartridge and needle are factory aligned etc so that I won't need to tweak shit. The table is on the right RPM, etc etc etc....

but I'm getting terrible shit distortion and only sound is coming out of the left channel. Sounds like the stylus is buggered?

Also the needle is tracking completely vertical from what I can see. =(

That's odd. If it's hooked up right I would expect to hear some of what's on the record coming out of the speakers. i can't imagine how the needle would be so fucked up as to just produce noise, but then again I'm no expert in these things. Maybe someone with more knowledge can suggest something?

Actually, could you be dealing with a ground loop or similar issue? Did you hook your grounding wire up to something (usually there's a ground wire connection on the amp, if it has a phono stage)?

I hooked up the ground on the phono to the ground on my receiver... I guess it isn't exactly "just noise"... Let's say I recognize it as basically 3% of the song that should be coming out of the speakers. It's so heavily distorted! And only

Out of the left channel.

i don't know what system you're using i didn't read the previous posts but the problem might be in your amplifier if your using one, maybe specifically with your phono input...

stephenG dude are you sure you're not trolling us??? :cat:
