for real time video manipulation yeah. I started to think of Max/MSP more of an studio instrument rather than something to "play live"—definitely there's a "scientific" approach when creating sounds in Max...

For every manipulation! The thing is that when ever I see something video related someone made with max, some manipulations of something newly generated it looks kinda interesting and that almost never happens with audio, maybe like few pieces here or there but complete tracks or albums, that’s really more like something anecdotal and exception to the rule. Usually what sounds good is what could have been made with a pair of Volcas anyway … to me that just shows how difficult is to make music with Max and how it messes with your mind thinking “well, what will my friends say if i make it Detroit again and now that I’m in here I should approach it scientifically, otherwise I could use a pair of Volcas” and that faqs the musical/emotional/energy part that music, as a form of art, is basically made of

It depends on the project and how much value you place on the 'scientific beauty' of your work. I see it as a playground where there are no inherent concepts of math or physics, apart from the need for quick execution, quite Zen... Additionally, you also learn many things in the process.

I really like what ikts is making. Making music just like autechre seems pointless but seems to be the aim of many people. Ikts needs a bigger label.

Hi—this was the prototype:

I like max a lot in theory - i just don't think i'm clever enough - there are a lot of things to keep in your mind at the same time. I find it very useful though and blows my mind with the possibilities. Sometimes just think okay I could do this in 5 minutes in a daw.

fair point and that's the main reason i gave up on max and similar platforms, like supercollider (not that similar but it's also not a daw)! maybe if I had more spare time but with this busy life it's just not worth it in my case. i also had another problem with max (and supercollider)... i had a million technical ideas per minute and it was hard for me to focus on the music bc my creative side, my so-called lateral horizon is much stronger than my pure iq and dedication to execute that specific original idea so bc of all those things I operate more efficiently with hardware gear or with something like Reason or even better in Ableton. i believe that max is a beautiful platform and I respect the effort ppl invest in it but I need to be honest with myself, it's not for me, at least not in this period of my life.

p.s. i still use max sometimes when I can't find a vst/hw substitute and when I absolutely need that effect
