only 90's kids can listen to this

its an interesting statement. For decades Tangerine Dream was considered kind of cheese ball and not electronic music to be taken seriously like Kraftwerk or Cluster, and this is the case with most of the people I know who are my age, kids of the 80s. I always thought it was weird though since TD evokes such extreme nostaglia becaue of all the 80s movies they scored. Anyways I would credit OPN for making that style of sound (masturbatory but good sounding minimalist synth arpeggios) cool again, now Tangerine Dream is sort of respectable again, and for kids of the 90s, probably none of them had any built in hostility towards Tangerine Dream, its a perfect fit. The newer stuff (r+7) is arguably equally as evocative of a different era of 'cheesy' new age synth music post analog synthesis, as Alco pointed out its very Claude Larson, but also playing off other tropes like Art of Noise vocal stabs, Kate Bush's productions.

nice post.

there's a lot of elitism surrounding this release, a la salvatorin's post you quoted. it's pretty obnoxious. one of the reasons i find this guy's stuff so tedious is exactly bc i have a lot of nostalgia for the sound worlds he explores and i also think a lot of the stuff he riffs off of is way better.

but only 90s kids get this. unless they are 90s kids and have different ideas. then they are wrong.

I do think it's pretty hilarious that Salv literally tried to get himself banned bc I was dissing this record. that's one for the watmm histories imo

im still waiting for alco to send me cool old stuff so i stop thinking this album is good or w/e

sory alco but this is really good. got my listen on last night - will be on my best of 2010-2019 for sure. Derivative or not - it's very well made

This still leaves me ice cold. OPN usually takes a while to grow on me, but I don't think this will. The two Commissions releases are great, though.

I wish I could at least hate this, now I just feel like one of those people who are physically incapable of enjoying music.

I didn't like it at first and thought it was too arty and weird... after 3-4 listens something clicked and I then became absolutely obsessed with it and spent the next month listening to nothing but OPN and related works (I prefer the Rifts-era stuff but this is still a solid release) So go figure.

well made it is but for me there's just not much there.

honestly i feel that way about all his stuff; there's something quite intriguing about it (like "oh cool weirdo 90s stuff commercials new age philip glass computer graphics laser disc everything from my childhood") but when i actually sit down to listen to it i'm just like..."nah."

i don't even care that his music can be derivative, it's just not my thing.
