not all people are scum, as we can see by the public outrage due to this person's actions. i have hope that we'll get our shit together as a species one day. it'll probably happen once our society begins to focus more on mental health when medicine becomes more advanced.

i think educated classes of people do focus plenty on mental health, the problem is that many people wrongly think they are mentally healthy or that people who have continuous anxiety or depression are 'whiners'. Try telling a Romney voter about the values of mental health and see the type of a response you get. I think it will take the taboo of mental health treatment being lifted

plenty of scum are outraged by this. Actually i think you'll find that scum are disproportionately represented amongst the ranks of the outraged. Most people would notice the story, nod disapprovingly and then move on, letting the criminal justice system in that jurisctriction deal with the problem. Whereas scum loiter around issues like this feeding off them, basking in the sense of moral superiority it gives these broken and hypocritical people.

Self evident and boring. Chaos and destruction is a constant in this world, it's unfair to cry over one instance of it over any other. Well at least to carry on about it, and use it as a baton to push others down when they aren't as emotionally challenged by the issue.

Well apparently where porn is readily available the incidence of sexual violence against women goes down. I'd hope that this would be the case for these weirdos as well then.

It is kind of gross now i actually have considered the matter over the course of catching up on this thread. I might give the thread a miss from now on. My earlier points stand though. As to pigster's point about kids these days growing up watching death videos. I did not want to watch that as a child and still don't. It would take a specific types of personality to have any desire to watch that (those with a curiosity for the macabre and the proto-psychopath), and the only other people encountering it would be those types that tend to follow the leader who is in to it. gleh odd.

See. I dunno how true this is! In high school (I'm talking ~2008) so many friends and people I knew all were familiar with liveleak, with most having seen a death video or two or some sort of fucked up violence. It was just the sort thing that people would check out, not like and then move on. But a lot young people were having access to and viewing this sort of stuff during high school without necessarily being (I don't think) fucked up people.

Well to that point, in centuries past, death was all around. They weren't any more fucked up than we are, managed to carry on. I think maybe i meant that some people fetishize those videos and they stand apart from normal man.

yeah I went through phases with extreme violence. My childhood friends and I had a fascination with gore for a good while and would watch slasher films and faces of death, which was all that was available at the time. Then that impulse ebbed until much later when I was in my 20s and going through some shit in my life, and I discovered ogrish.com. I'd say at that point in time it was actually therapeutic in some way to be exposed to the worst shit the internet had to offer (short of child porn, have never seen any real images of child porn). I found my natural limit as well with the beheading videos, I ended up downloading over 20 of them (they're all on a hard drive somewhere), from "chechclear" (the one you're talking about zaphod) through all the Iraq and Afghanistan ones. I only was able to watch 3 or 4 of them before I'd had my fill. Truly shocking stuff that actually made me truly physically dizzy to watch.

Since then I've returned to a baseline sensitive about stuff. I still have a natural medical curiosity about injuries and diseases if someone posts something on reddit. But I will usually fast-forward through extreme violence in film, even though I'm aware it's fictional (for example, fast forwarded through the baby fucking scene in Serbian film).

Ian Watkins is particularly sick, he needs to be imprisoned and he is, tbh, one of those cases where I personally question my views on the death penalty or in this specific case, judicial authorized chemical castration. But I cannot entertain the relishing in the fact that he should be himself tortured and raped, whether it be in some hypothetical court fantasy, or in the potential reality of his fate in prison by other inmates. Society can never avenge such heinous crimes, it can only condemn them and maintain a higher dignity by holding those responsible. You can't have justice system that gives "equal" punishments without authorizing someone to administer it...and there would be plenty of sick and depraved people ready to sign up for that job, as there always were in the past...i.e. every brutal and sick form of capital punishment in the world until the last century or so. I remember reading Dan Savage's columns regularly and the first time a "gold star" (as Savage coins them) pedophile wrote in. A man who is sexually stimulated by children but who has never acted upon it and recognizes morally it's wrong to even ponder the idea of it. And so can be said for far more people regarding fantasies and mental pleasure in thoughts of rape, murder, torture, and heinous violence in general.

That's why there's such a disturbing fine line from things like say, "extreme" porn and legally dubious forms of hentai that are fictional creations, or the extremely violent and disturbing displays of sadistic torture and murder in Hollywood films like SAW and Hostel or 1st person video games. These are all legal and supported by basic concepts of free speech, yet when the transpire in real life against other individuals they are the most heinous criminal acts that can be committed.

I digress...the other thing that's so inherently sad about pedophiles, is that there's never going to be an easy solution for dealing with even those who are convicted of sexual crimes. Even those who do every possible legal thing possible to become "safe" members of society will always be pariahs. Even the most understanding citizens will never easily accept them back into their communities. That Louis Theroux doc (posted earlier) highlights that especially.
